HOSHORYU is Yokozuna
On Jan 28 messengers of the Japan Sumo Association visited Hoshoryu and officially declared he was voted yokozuna. Hoshoryu accepted the honor.
On Jan 31, he performed his first ceremony as yokozuna at the Meiji Shrine.
He adopted the Unryu form ceremony.
His uncle, former yokozuna Asashoryu attended the ceremony.
Final day
Kirishima thrust down Takerufuji to win his 11th bout.
Ohho pushed out Kinbozan. As a result they tied for the Emperor's Cup.
Daeisho forced out Abi for his 11th win.
Onosato thurst out Ura for his 10th win.
Hoshoryu drove out Kotozakura. The Mongolian tied for the Emperor's Cup.
As a result, Ohho, Kinbozan, Hoshoryu went into a run off.
Hoshoryu first faced Kinbozan,and threw the Kazhafstani.
He then faced Ohho. It was a fierce bout in which the ozeki drove down Ohho.
With this win, Hoshoryu secured the Emperor's Cup.It's for the 2nd time and the first as ozeki.
14th day
On the verge of the ring, Ohho thrust dow Takanosho for his 11th win.
Kimbozan threw Kirishima with his right to win his 12th bout and kept his lead.
Ura went into Wakatakakage and drove him out. Both are 7-7.
Daieisho drove out Hiradoumi for his 10th win.
Onosato pushed out Kotozakura easily to win his 9th bout.
Hoshoryu was focused. He immediately got hold of Takerufuji's belt, lifted him, then forced him out the ring.
As a result It's now only Ohho and Hoshoryu who tie as runner up in the tourney race.
13th day
40 year old Tamawashi pushed out Oonokatsu to secure a majority win.
Ohho drove down Ura for his 10th win.
Kirishima in a competitive bout against Takayasu managed to stay in the ring, while Takayasu's foot left as the both fell.
Kirishima won his 10th bout.
Takerufuji shoved forward to take Abi out the ring. It's his 10th win.
Hoshoryu threw Ohnosato by his neck and won.
Kinbozan powerfully thrust Kotozakura and won.
Kotozakura succumbed to a majority loss.
Kinbozan leads, followed by the same 4 who all added a win.
12th day
Kirishima got behind Ohho and drove him down. Both are 9-3.
Daieisho forced down Ura for a majority win.
Hoshoryu drove Kinbozan down for his 9th win.
Takerufuji forced down Kotozakura for his 9th win.
Onosato drove out Chiyoshoma. Both are 8-4.
Kinbozan continues to lead, followed by 4 rikishis with 3 losses each.
11th day
Oonokatsu attacked Ohho but Ohho withstood and threw to win his 9th bout.
Kirishima was aggressive and pushed down Tamawashi to secure a majority win.
Daieisho pushed out Takerufuji for his 7th win.
Kotozakura's forced prompted Wakatakakage's foot to leave the ring.
The ozeki won his 5th bout.
Kinbouzan thrust down Ohnosato for his 10th win.
Hoshoryu got hold of Chiyoshoma's belt and forced a throw to win.
Both are 8-3.
Kinbouzan leads, followed by Ohho.
10th day
Takerufuji thrust down Ichiyamamoto a secured a majority win.
Shodai pushed out Mitakeumi. Mitakeumi succumbed to a majority loss.
Ohho drove out Tamawashi to clinch a majority win.
Kirishima quickly forced down Chiyoshoma who lost his 2nd bout.
Abi gave Kinbozan thrusts, forcing the Kazhafstani to fall.
It's Kinbozan's first loss.
Wakatakakage forced Tobizaru to roll on the ring. It's his 5th win.
Ohnosato in his 3rd face off against Gonoyama won.
Hoshoryu forced Daieisho to fall on his hands.
Kotozakura pushed out Hiradoumi.
Kinbouzan continued to lead.
9th day
Kinbozan and Takerufuji fought eachother aggressively.
In the end Kinbozan threw Takerufuji to win his 9th bout.
Endo forced Tamawashi down for his 3rd loss.
Chiyoshoma drove Chiranoumi down to secure a majority win.
Ohho drove down Atamifuji for his 7th win.
Kirishima quickly pushed out Abi for his 6th win.
Hiradoumi forced Hoshoryu to fall. It's the ozeki's 3rd loss.
Ura drove Kotozakura down. It's the ozekis 6th loss.
Ohnosato forced Daieisho to fall and took his 6th win.
8th day
Takerufuji pushed and pushed to take out Kitanowaka.
Kinbouzan drove out Tamawashi to secure a majority win.
Chiyoshoma was driven down by Takerafuji and took his first loss.
Kirishima drove out Wakamotoharu for his 5th win.
Daieisho forced Takanosho out for his 6th win.
Kotozakura and Ohsho had an aggressive bout in which in the end the ozeki managed a throw to win.
It's his 3rd win.
Ohnosato drove out Wakatakakage.
Shodai ushed Hoshoryu back and drove him down.
It's the Mongolian ozeki's 2nd loss.
Kinbouzan is the sole leader.
7th day
Kinbouzan pushed down Tokihayate for his 7th win.
Tamawashi pulled back and thrust down Nishikigi for his 6th win.
Takerufuji did not stop fighting and pushed out Oushoma out of the dirt mound.
Former ozekis faced eachother Takayasu forced out Mitakeumi for his 4th win.
Mitakeumi lost his 5th bout.
Chiyoshoma improved his perfect record without fighting as Roga withdrew from the tourney.
Ohnosato managed to turn himself around to drive out Atamifuji for his 4th win.
Hoshoryu fought aggressively against Ohho. Ohho turned his back, and Hoshoryu stuck to him to drive Ohho out.
They became 6-1.
Kotozakura managed to throw Gonoyama to win his 2nd bout.
6th day
It was a sell out crowd, but Terunofuji was no more.
He formally announced his retirement.
He said he fought for too long.
As to the bouts, Kazhafstani born Kinbouzan thrust out Kagayaki for his 6th win.
Takerufuji banged into Chiranoumi and took him out.
Tamawashi was driven out by Takarafuji to take his first loss.
Chiyoshoma threw Mitakeumi to win his 6th bout.
Ohho was unfazed, keeping his eyes on the speedy Tobizaru and in the end pushed him out.
Hoshoryu got hold of Gonoyama's belt and drove him out for his 5th win.
Kotozakura and Atamifuji fought twice.
It's for a strange occurrance of a refree raising his hand to indicate the bout was over, but it was not.
In any case Atamifuji won both times.
It's Kotozakura's 5th loss.
Ohnosato attacked Shodai and won his 3rd bout.
5th day
Terunofuji withdrew and his opponent Gonoyama was given an automatic win.
Sad rumors spread that he was thinking of retiring.
Meanwhile exciting bouts were witnessed on the day.
Takerufuji pushed out Kotoshoho for his 4th win.
Tamawashi forced Meisei to fall forward.
Roga fought his first bout of this tourney but lost to Endo.
Chiyoshoma forced Takayasu out for his 5th win.
Daieisho with thrusts forced Wakatakakage out for his 4th win.
Abi pushed out Wakamotoharu for his 4th win.
Kotozakura lost his 4th bout to Shodai.
His chance for yokozuna promotion has become slim.
Ohho forced out Ohnosato for his 5th win.
Atamifuji threw Hoshoryu and won his first bout. It's the ozeki's first loss.
4th day
Tamawashi pushed out Takerufuji to win his 4th bout.
Chiyoshoma forced Endo out also for his 4th win.
An interesting skill was displayed by Ura. He turned as Takayasu was above his head and forced Takayasu down.
Both were 2-2.
Wakatakakage drove Atamifuji down for his 2nd win.
Ohho thrust down Daieisho for his 4th win.
Ohnosato fell forward to Abi's thrust taking his 2nd loss.
Hoshoryu looked like he was in danger pinned to the edge of the ring. But he remained inside and forced out Takanosho for his 4th win.
Kirishima managed to drive out Kotozakura who succumbed to his 3rd loss.
It's Kirishima's first win.
Terunofuji could not fight well against Tobizaru and in the end was driven out from behind.
It's the yokozuna's 2nd loss.
3rd day
Takerufuji had to redo his bout against Oonokatsu.
In the 2nd try, Takarufuji gave thrusts after thrust and forced his opponent out.
Tamawashi pushed out Midorifuji also for his 3rd win.
Abi pulled back and thrust down Atamifuji for his 2nd win.
Daieisho gave thrusts and pushed out Shodai for his 3rd win.
Ohho with thrusts drove down Wakamotoharu to win his 3rd bout.
Hoshoryu quickly thrust out Wakatakakage for his 3rd win.
Tobizaru forced Kotozakura to fall down the ring. It's the ozeki's 2nd loss.
Ohnosato managed to defeat Takanosho who's foot left the ring first.
Terunofuji took time against Kirishima,and drove the former ozeki out in a minute 31 second bout.
2nd day
Takerufuji slapped Meisei and pushed him out for his 2nd win.
Takayasu thrust down Endo for his first win.
Chiyoshoma held Ura's head down and won.
Ohho pushed out Wakatakakage for his 2nd win.
Daieisho gave shoves and pushed out Atamifuji for his 2nd win.
Abi attacked Kotozakura's throat the thrust out the ozeki.
Ohnosato pushed out Kirishima for his first win.
Hoshoryu got hold of Tobizaru's belt and quickly forced him out to win his 2nd bout.
Terunofuji struggled against Takanosho but in the end walked him out the ring for his first win.
First day
31 year old Tamashoho of Mongolia made his debut in makuuchi division and won his first bout
by driving down Kagayaki.
Takerufuji for the first time served as Yokozuna Terunofuji's sword bearer during the yokozuna ring entrance ceremony.
Takerufuji forced down Nishikigi to win.
40 year old Tamawashi with a powerful force drove down Ohshoma.
Mitakeuji with a skillful pause thrust down Endo.
Ura charged into Shodai and won.
Ohho forced out Abi.
Tobizaru quickly drove down Ohnosato.
Ohnosato was in the grand tourney wearing his hair in a fan shaped for the first time as it's grown long enough.
Hoshoryu in a competitive bout forced out Kirishima.
Kotozakuro fought cautiously against Takanosho and in the end forced him out.
Wakatakakage forced Terunofuji to fall forward.

Terunofuji was back but....
The yokozuna decided to return to fight after 2 grand tourney absense.
He's reported not to be in good shape through as he has not been practicing enough.
In the local tourney after the autumn grand tourney, he injured his knee.

Kotozakura, winner of Kyushu grand tourney 2024, and Mongolian born Hoshoryu who also performed as well,
both have the chance to be promoted yokozuna depending on how well they perform this time.
