Hakuho retires
On Oct 1, Hakuho held a news conference to explain he was no longer physically able to compete as yokozuna. He thanked his stable master Miyagino for discovering him and mentoring him. He said he has had 2 of the most memorable bouts, one against Asashoryu and another against Kisenosato. He will retire by the name of Magaki and will coach young rikishi.

Final day
Endo threw Okinoumi with his right and won his 11th bout. Tochinoshin was driven out bay Takarafuji, succumbing to his 8th loss. Daieisho quickly pushed out Ichinojo for his 10th win. Myogiryu touched the dirt, losing to Meisei's thrust, finishing the tourney 11-4. His loss, automatically gave Terunofuji the tourney victory. Takakeisho pulled back and lost in the bout againt Mitakeumi. Terunofuji got a hold of Shodai's belt and pushed the ozek out. It's the 5th time Terunofuji's won the Emperor Cup. It's the new yokozuna's feat which has not been achieved since Kisenosato won the tourney promoted to yokozuna.

14th day
Kiribayama hooked his leg around Tochinoshin's to trip him. The Mongolian won his 8th bout. Endo falls to Ichinojo's thrust losing his 4th bout. Okinoumi throws Mitakeumi for his 10th win. Oonosho after facing off against Meisei is thrust down and immediately falls succumbing to his 4th loss. Myogiryu gets hold of Shodai's belt and drives the ozeki out for his 11th win. Terunofuji throws Takakeisho for his 12th win. Terunofuji leads. Myogiryu is the only runner up.

13th day
Endo forced down Kiribayama for his 10th win. Ichinojo with his arms around Okinoumi drove him out. Okinoumi lost his 4th bout. Takakeisho did not charge forward powerfully this time but watched carefully as he fought. Perhaps this cautiousness did not help. He lost was thrown by Myogiryu. Myogiryu won his 10th bout. Shodai was driven out by Oonosho who earned his 10th win. Terunofuji slowly forced out Mitakeumi winning his 11th bout.

12th day
Myogiryu lost to Kagayaki's push taking his 3rd loss. Ura was driven down by Chiyomaru succumbing to a majority loss. Okinoumi threw Kiribayama on the ring for his 9th win. Endo thrust town Takanosho for his 9th win. Tamawashi earned his 5th win without sweating for it as his opponent Takayasu withdrew from an injury. Mitakeumi lost easily to Oonosho. It's Oonosho's 9th win. Shodai failed to face off properly against Ichinojo twice. In the 3rd try, he immediately posed to show he was in the right position. But he lost to Ichinojo. Takakeisho shoved aggressively against Takarafuji and secured a majority win. With this win, Takakeisho saved himself from falling from ozeki rank. Terunofuji lost to a throw by Meisei. The yokozuna still leads, followed by 4 rikishi.

11th day
Endo drove out Kaisei for a majority win. Myogiryu forced out Ichiyamamoto to earn his 9th win. Chiyonokuni forced down Tobizaru for his 8th win. Okinoumi drove out Yutakayama to secure a majority win. Miyakeumi pushed out Daieisho for his 8th win. Takakeisho pulled away and forced down Oonosho for his 7th win. Shodai managed to throw Meisei with his left to earn a majority win. Terunofuji and Takayasu fought a competitive bout. In the end the yokozuna threw the former ozeki banging him down into where rikishi sat. Takayasu could not get up for a while.Later it was leaned he injured his hamstring and needs to rest for 2 weeks.

10th day
Myogiryu drives out Okinoumi to secure a majority win. Tochinoshin manages to drive down Tobizaru for his 4th win. Oonosho pushes out Endo to clinch a majority win. Mitakeumi won with a push out against Takatakekage for his 7th win. Shodai forced Daieisho down for his 7th win. Takakeisho and Meisei attacked eachother. In the end the ozeki won with a push out. For the first time Ura faces Terunofuji. For a while Ura's arm was under Terunofuji, but slipped it out, and fought. Ura tried to grab the yokozuna's leg, but in the end the yokozuna won by throwing him. It's Ura's 6th loss.

9th day
Endo forced down Ichiyamamoto for his 7th win. Okinoumi pushed ouyt Tobizaru for his 7th win. Miyogiryu pulled away and lost to Oonosho. Both are 7-2. Ura was forced down by Chiyotairyu. It's his 5th loss. Hoshoryu and Wakatakekage fought a competitive bout. In the end, Hoshoryu hooked his leg round Wakatakekage's and threw him. It's the Mongolian's 3rd win. Takakeisho pushed out Takayasu for his 5th win. Shodai was able to bear Chiyoshoma's attack and pushed him out. It's the ozeki's 6th win. Chiyoshoma succumbed to a majority loss. Daieisho forced out Terunofuji. It's the yokozuna's first loss.

8th day
Myogiryu shoved, then shoved again to drive out Chiyonoho to win his 7th bout. Endo drove Shimanoumi out from behind to earn his 6th win. Ura and Tobizaru stopped moving for awhile, then Ura moved, shoved Tobizaru down. Both are 4-4. Ura grinned after the bout, with a look of pain. Takayasu lost to Chiyoshoma's throw, losing his 5th bout. Hoshoryu returned after pulling out for 3 days to recover from tonsillitis. Mitakeumi forced Meisei down on his belly. Kotonowaka throws Shodai on the ring. It's the ozeki's 3rd loss. Takakeisho pushed and drives down Daieisho for his 4th win. Tamawashi attacked Terunofuji's throat. Terunofuji withstood, changed gear to drive Tamawashi out the ring. The new yokozuna clinched a majority win.

7th day
Endo drove out Chiyonokuni for his 5th win. Myogiryu forced out Shimanoumi earning his 6th win. Daieisho thrust down Kiribayama. Both are 5-2. Takayasu gave thrusts, and Takanosho fell. Both are 3-4. Mitakeumi lost to Ichinojo taking his 2nd defeat. Takakeisho pushed forward and beat Wakatakekage. Both are 3-4. Shodai powerfully drove out Tamawashi for his 5th win. Kotonowaka put on a good fight against Terunofuji. But in the end the yokozuna got hold of Kotonowaka's belt and forced him out.

6th day
Ura was able to push out huge Aoiyama for his 3rd win. Oonosho drove Tobizaru out from behind for his 5th win. Takayasu forced down Ichinojo for his 2nd win. Kiribayama was powerful, picking up Shodai and taking him out. It's Shodai's 2nd loss. Takakeisho pulled back and lost to Tamawashi. It's the ozeki's 4th loss. Terunofuji squeezed Wakatakakage's arms under his own arms and drove him out.

5th day
Chiyotairyu forced down Tochinoshin. Ura won by picking Daieisho up from behind and driving him out using a skill not seen for 16 years, with the last performed by Asashoryu. It's his 2nd win. Takayasu won without fighting as Hoshoryu pulled out for suddenly developing tonsillitis. Takakeisho gave thrusts to push out Kotonowaka who went to the same school. It's the ozeki's 2nd win. Shodai pushed out Wakatakakage for his 4th win. Terunofuji cautiously fought against Kiribayama and forced him out in a minute long bout.

4th day
Ura pushed out Chiyoshoma for his first win. Mitakeumi drove down Takayasu for his 3rd win. Shodai managed to forced Takanosho down for his 3rd win. Takakeisho struggles but in the end forced down Hoshoryu. It's the ozeki's first win. Terunofuji prompts Hokutofuji to drop. The yokozuna keeps his record clean.

3rd day
Ura was slow to take off and was pushed out by Oonosho. Takayasu and Kiribayama fought for a long time a bout lacking action. At 3 minutes 17 seconds Kiribayama forced the former ozeki down for his 3rd win. Ichinojo threw Takakeisho down the ring. The ozeki succumbed to his 3rd loss. Shodai shoved and shoved to drive out Hokutofuji. Terunofuji forced Takanosho out for his 3rd win.

2nd day
Endo charged straight into Tochinoshin and drove the Georgian out. Tobizaru threw Chiyotairyu down for his 2nd win. Ura was slapped a few times by Terutsuyoshi, losing and ending up with a bloody face. Shodai struggled against Takayasu but was able to push the former ozeki out. Takakeisho pulled away, and Kiribayama pushed the ozeki out. Terunofuji got hold of Hoshoryu's belt with one hand and shoved with another to defeat him.

First day
It's Terunofuji's debut as yokozuna. His ring entrance was smooth with Takarafuji and Terutsuyoshi by his side. As to the bout, Tochinoshin threw Kotoeiko to win. Takayasu lost to Wakakakekage. Mitakeumi pushed out Takanosho. Ozeki Takakeisho was back but pulled awa and lost to Hokutofuji. Shodai was driving out by Hoshoryu, the nephew of former yokozuna Asashoryu. Terunofuji with his left grip drove out Ichinojo.

Miyagino Stable including Hakuho to withdraw
As a result of regular PCR testing,2 rikishi of Miyagino tested positive. All rikishi of the stable will not take part in the autumn tourney. It includes Hakuho, Ishiura and Enho. Terunofuji's first yokozuna ceremony
Normally, the auspicious ceremony takes place with many onlookers at the Meiji Shrine. But the ceremony on Aug 24 took place with only stakeholders due to the COVID-19 state of emergency.
