Takayasu is Ozeki
On May 31, the Japan Sumo Association send messengers to Takayasu's stable. There they told him that he has been voted unanimously to the position of ozeki. Takayasu accepted it. His Filipino mother and Japanese father was there at the stable to witness the historic day. Yokozuna Kisenosato also congratulated him as a member of the same stable.

Final day
Kotoshogiku forced out Ikioi to finish with 7 wins. Goeido gave thrusts then was forced down by Tamawashi. It's Tamawashi's 10th win while the ozeki finished with 6 losses. Terunofuji drove down Takayasu for his 12th win. Harumafuji and Hakuho played a bout which lasted more than an hour. Hakuho managed to drive out Harumafuji to end the tourney with a perfect record.

14th day
Kotoshogiku drove out Daieisho for his 6th win. Shodai forced down Takayasu. Takayasu succumbed to his 3rd loss. Hakuho lowered his head and forced Terunofuji out. With this win, Hakuho secured the Emperor's Cup. It's his 38th tourney victory. Harumafuji pulled back and prompted by Goeido's thrust to touch the dirt and lost.

13th day
Ura fell to Ikioi's shoves and lost his 3rd bout. Kotoshogiku drove out Okinoumi. Goeido managed to drive out Takarafuji to secure a majority win and keep his ozeki ranking. Tochiozan went low inside Terunofuji but the ozeki was able to keep himself inside the ring while forcing Tochiozan down. Takayasu quickly got hold of Harumafuji's belt. Harumafuji shoved but went down the ring. Both are 11-2. Harumafuji and Tamawashi could not face off twice. When the bout took off, the yokozuna shifted slightly and forced down Tamawashi. Hakuho with 1 more win can secure the Emperor's Cup.

12th day
Ura shifted his position, pulled back then forced out Hokutofuji for his 10th win. Kotoshogiku shoved and shoved but Mitakeumi resisted and drove out the ozeki. Kotoshogiku succumbed to a majority loss. Takayasu threw Takarafuji with his right for his 10th win. Terunofuji pulled Shodai and drove him out also for his 10th win. Harumafuji was automatically given a win since his opponent for the day Takanoiwa pulled out with an injury. Goeido quickly drove out Aoiyama. Hakuho drove out Tochiozan to keep the lead.

11th day
Kotoshogiku shoved and shoved and drove out Chiyonokuni for his 4th win. Takayasu gave Tochiozan thrusts then forced him down to win his 8th bout. Terunofuji drove down Aoiyama on the dirt. Kisenosato's withdrawal from the tourney was announced. So Tamawashi was automatically given a win. Hakuho forced Goeido down to keep his record clean. Harumafuji was not as powerful as in recent bouts, unable to push Mitakeumi forward, and his foot stepped out the ring. It's the yokozuna's first loss.

10th day
Ura hooked his leg around Kaisei and forced the Brazilian down to earn a majority win. Terunofuji quickly drove out Yoshikaze to also secure a majority win. Goeido forced down Chiyoshoma. Harumafuji banged into Tochiozan, shoved him out fast to keep his record clean. Kotoshogiku charged forward to drive out Kisenosato. Kisenosato could not fight back at all. Hakuho went low and drove down Takayasu. Takayasu succumbed to his 2nd loss.

9th day
Takayasu threw Chiyonokuni and secured a majority win. Kotoshogiku shoved and shoved and drove out Endo for his 2nd win. Terunofuji drove out Goeido. Tochiozan got hold of Kisenosato, shoved and shoved and won. It's the yokozuna's 3rd loss. Hakuho got hold of Aoiyama with his right and threw him while shoving his head. Harumafuji and Tamawashi fought fiercely. In the end the yokozuna forced him out and together went down the ring.

8th day
Tamawashi defeated Okinoumi for his 6th win. Takayasu thrust down Yoshikaze for his 7th win. Terunofuji got his arms around Mitakeumi's and drove him out for his 6th win. Goeido stopped fighting for a moment, and he pulled back while Endo pushed forward and won. It's Goeido's 3rd loss. Hakuho threw Kotoshogiku down for his 8th win. Harumafuji powerfully pushed out Chiyoshoma. Kisenosato again fought slowly and in the end pushed out Aoiyama for his 6th win.

7th day
Takayasu forced Chiyoshoma to fall by thrusting him down. Goeido thrust down Kotoshogiku with his right. Terunofuji smoothly drove out Okinoumi. Harumafuji gave thrusts and pushed out Yoshikaze, but held on to him so he did not fall down the ring. Kisenosato held still for a while then drove out Mitakeumi for his 4th win. Hakuho got hold of Daieisho's belt and drove him out.

6th day
Tamawashi powerfully pushed out Takayasu. It's Takayasu's first loss. Yoshikaze forced Kotoshogiku down. The former ozeki lost again. Terunofuji drove Chiyonokuni out. Goeido threw Mitakeumi with a grasp of the back of his belt. Kisenosato managed to force down Daieisho for his 4th win. Endo tried to withstand Hakuho's thrust and resisted but in the end Hakuho drove him out the ring. Harumafuji pushed powerfully against Aoiyama and won his 6th bout.

5th day
Takayasu drove out Endo. Goeido went into Chiyonokuni and pushed him out to win his 3rd bout. Kotoshogiku shoved and shoved, but in the end Terunofuji won with a throw. Hakuho got hold of Mitakeumi's belt and threw him down the ring. Okinoumi was automatically given a ring as his opponent Kakuryu withdrew from the tourney. Harumafuji shifted his position as he stood up to fight, prompting Daieisho to fall. Kisenosato struggled against Chiyoshoma, fighting the bout for 30 seconds, but in the end the yokozuna won his 3rd bout.

4th day
Mitakeumi attacked Takayasu. Takayasu then threw his opponent by his next powerfully and won. It's his 4th win. Kotoshogiku shoved and shoved and was finally about to drive out Tamawashi for his first win. Terunofuji forced Chiyoshoma down the ring for his 2nd win. Goeito gave thrusts and forced out Daieisho for his 2nd win. Harumafuji pushed out Chiyonokuni. Yoshikaze attacked back Kakuryu and won. It's the yokozuna's 3rd loss. Endo attacked Kisenosato and his knee appeared to have slipped but went straight ahead and drove out the yokozuna. It's Kisenosato's 2nd loss. Hakuho managed to get a hold of Okinoumi's belt and forced him out for his 4th win.

3rd day
Ura forced Ishiura to turn his back towards him and drove Ishiura out the ring for his 3rd win. Tochiozan pushed out Takekaze also for his 3rd win. Takayasu thrust Kotoshogiku hard then forced the former ozeki down. Takayasu won his 3rd bout. Goeido charged into Yoshikaze but Yoshikaze slightly moved to the side prompting Goeido to touch the dirt. Terunofuji drove down Daieisho for his 1st win. Endo attacked Kakuryu's throat. Kakuryu managed to drive Endo down for his 1st win. Kisenosato struggled at the verge of the ring while but managed to withstand Chiyonokuni's shoves, pushed forward and won. Hakuho slapped Chiyoshoma then threw him and walked out of the ring while doing so managing to win. Harumafuji fought low and drove out Okinoumi.

2nd day
Kotoshogiku grabbed Chiyoshoma but not strong enough. Choyoshoma pulled away and the former ozeki dropped on the ring. Tamawashi with thrusts after thrusts drove out Terunofuji. The ozeki fell on Kisenosato waiting below the ring. It appeared Kisenosato was in pain. Takayasu gave Goeido thrusts and out went the ozeki. Kisenosato climbed up the ring to face Okinoumi. The yokozuna shoved and shoved to drive Okinoumi out to the delight of fans. Hakuho and Yoshikaze fiercely attacked eachother. In the end Hakuho thrust down Yoshikaze to win. Harumafuji pushed and pushed and pushed out Endo. Kakuryu banged into Chiyonokuni who shifted his position which forced the yokozuna to lose balance and fall. Kakuryu has not won a bout yet.

1st day
The later part of the highest makuuchi division was observed by Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako. Ozeki candidate Takayasu faced Daieisho and with an audible slap droved him down. Goeido pulled away and managed to keep his foot inside the ring while forced Okinoumi to fall. Terunofuji placed his arms around Endo but was unable to do much and was driven out. Hakuho lost balance and while falling, forced Chiyonokuni to step out of the ring first. Harumafuji shoved and shoved Kotoshogiku out the ring. Kakuryu pushed forward but Mitakeumi fought back and pushed out the yokozuna. Kisenosato received a big applause as he came on the ring. His left shoulder was tapped and looked painful. Yoshikaze shoved and Kisenosato could not fight back, leaving the ring powerlessly.

Pre Tourney highlight
Kisenosato announces he is in the May tourney
On May 11, his stable master Takonoura announced Kisenosato will fight in the May tourney. But Kisenosato missed the day's practice.

Fans disappointed Kisenosato absent from general practice
Kisenosato did not show up at the Ryogoku Kokugikan practive on May 3. His stable master did not inform the Japan Sumo Association about his absence either. Stable master Takanoura later apologized for not informing.
