May tourney is cancelled, July tourney will not be in Nagoya
Japan Sumo Association decided to cancel on May 4, as the government decided to extend the state of emergency for Covid-19 beyond May 7 to as long as May 31. It's announced the July tourney will take place in Tokyo with no audience. The dates are July 19 to August 2. The reason is to avoid travelling from Tokyo to Nagoya. At the same time the association announced local tournaments scheduled in the autumn will be cancelled.

Covid19 infection in sumo
It came to light on April 10 that a makushita rikishi tested positive for the virus and was hospitalized. Then Takadagawa stable master or former Akinoshima and 6 rikishi were confirmed infected. It includes Hakuyozan ranked in the juryo division.

Asanoyama is ozeki
Japan Sumo Association voted unanimously for the promotion of 26 year old Asanoyama to ozeki. Messengers from the association conveyed the decision to Asanoyama and his stable master Takasago on March 25. He will receive a salary of 2.5 million yen. He will be able to fly first class, take the green car on the bullet train.
