Final day
Tochinoshin from Georgia defeated Dejima with an overarm throw to finish with a majority win. Dejima succumbed to a majority loss. Kisenosato forced Takamisakari out to earn a majority win. Baruto grabbed Harumafuji's foot, picked the Mongolian up and drove him out. It's Baruto's 9th win. Koto-o-shu got hold of Kaio's belt with his right and forced the popular ozeki out. The Bulgarian won his 10th bout in front of his country's president. Chiyotaikai blasted thrusts against Goeido then pulled back, driving Goeido down. Chiyo at last secured a majority win. The crowd was excited Hakuho and Asashoryu were at last facing eachother. Hakuho drove Asashoryu out, and with 1 loss each, they went into a playoff. In the playoff, Asashoryu got hold of Hakuho's belt with his left, and the front of his belt with his right. Asashoryu drove Hakuho out and clinched the Emperor's Cup for the 23rd time. Asashoryu waved to sumo fans. He was presented a trophy by Prime Minister Taro Aso.

14th day
Gigantic Yamamotoyama drove out Yosayutaka and clinched a majority win. Dejima drove out Tamanoshima for his 7th win. Takamisakari was pushed out by Tochiozan succumbing to a majority loss. Baruto finally won after 5 straight defeats. He pushed out Miyabiyama. With this win Baruto secured a majority win. Harumafuji shoved Koto-o-shu then drove the Bulgarian out from behind. Harumafuji was able to clinch a majority win. Chiyotaikai shifted his position and forced Hakuho to lose balance. But at the same time, Chiyo himself lost balance and fell on his knee. With that result, Chiyo lost. Asashoryu got hold of Kaio's belt and drove him out to keep the lead.

13th day
Dejima pushed against the great big Yamamotoyama, but the former ozeki was pushed back and tumbled down the ring. Wakanosato drove Takamisakari out. Kotoshogiku got hold of Miyabiyama and forced him out. Both are 5-8. Harumafuji shoved down Takekaze's head and then threw him for his 7th win. Takekaze succumbed to a majority loss. Goeido moved slightly to the side and drove Kaio out. It's Goeido's 10th win. Chiyotaikai attacked Asashoryu's throat. But he could not keep on thrusting. Instead the yokozuna threw him on the dirt. Hakuho went around Koto-o-shu and drove the Bulgarian down.

12th day
Dejima went head on too fast, he lost balance and was driven down by Tochinonada. Takamisakari managed to force down Tosanoumi for his 6th win. Goeido drove out Tochiozan. Both are 9-3. Miyabiyama and Wakanosato clashed into eachother Miyabiyama won with a push out. Wakanosato succumbed to a majority loss. Kaio got hold of Takekaze's arm and threw him out the ring to clinch a majority win. Koto-o-shu drove Kokkai out. Hakuho appeared all sweaty. But he did not have a bout to fight as Kotomitsuki pulled out. Chiyotaikai shifted position as he stood up to fight. But Harumafuji was not affected. He won by forcing a throw on Chiyo. Baruto got his hand on Asashoryu's belt. But the yokozuna drove the big Estonian out.

11th day
Hokutoriki forced Tochiozan easily out of the ring for a majority win. It's Tochiozan's 2nd loss. Dejima drove out Wakanosato. Goeido forced Futeno out from his back a secured a majority win. Takekaze pushed out Takamisakari. Both are 5-6. Baruto lost to Kotoshogiku. Chiyotaikai appeared to have a good start, but he was forced to turn, lost his balance and was driven out by Miyabiyama. Harumafuji moved around and defeated Kotomitsuki. Asashoryu thrust down Koto-o-shu to keep his record clean. Hakuho appeared at one point at a disadvantage with Kaio getting hold of his belt, but the yokozuna was able to push out the veteran ozeki. Hakuho follows Asashoryu for the Emperor's Cup.

10th day
Tochiozan drove Kakuryu out for his 9th win. Dejima defeated Tokitenku for his 5th win. Miyabiyama thrust down Kokkai's head and won. Kyokutenho drove out Takamisakari. Goeido drove out Baruto. It's the Estonian's 3rd loss. Kaio pulled back and forced Yoshikaze to fall. Chiyotaikai charged forward and drove out Koto-o-shu. Harumafuji got a hold of the back of Hakuho's belt with his left. He then shoved the yokozuna's knee and forced him out. It's Hakuho's first loss. Asashoryu drove out Kotomitsuki to be the sole leader. Asashoryu worried about his left elbow after the bout. In the case of Kotomitsuki he succumbed to a majority loss.

9th day
Tochiozan lost his first bout to Tamanoshima. Takamisakari got hold of Kakuryu's belt and drove him out for his 5th win. Kisenosato drove out Miyabiyama for his 4th win. Koto-o-shu forced out Wakanosato to secure a majority win. Kotomitsuki could not get a hold of Kokkai and in the end lost. It's the ozeki's 7th loss. Chiyotaikai attacked Kaio, but Kaio withstood, got hold of Chiyo's belt with his right and shoved to win. Asashoryu forced Harumafuji down. Hakuho and Baruto fought a long bout exceeding a minute. They both reached for eachother's belt and could not move for a while. But in the end Hakuho threw Baruto to keep his record clean. The 2 yokozuna tie for a lead.

8th day
Tochiozan pushed out Homasho to already clinch a majority win. Tosanoumi thrust down Dejima. Kyokutenho pushed out Miyabiyama. Kotoshogiku was automatically given a win as Toyonoshima could not fight the rest of the tourney due to his injured elbow. Baruto got a firm hold of Chiyotaikai and drove the ozeki out. Kotomitsuki pushed out Yoshikaze for his 2nd win. Harumafuji forced Kaio out for his 3rd win. Goeido shifted to the side but Koto-o-shu kept his eyes on his opponent and won with a push out. Hakuho shoved Kisenosato by his arm, then pushed him out to extend his winning streak. Asashoryu too won by pushing down Aminishiki. It's the first time in 8 years that 2 yokozunas have recorded 8 straight wins. That's since the days of Musashimaru and Takanohana.

7th day
Dejima shifted to the side at the start, making Kokkai lose balance and fall. Goeido threw Takamisakari on the ring. Kotoshogiku shoved and was pushed back by Kisenosato several times, but in the end was able to win with a push out. It's Kotoshogiku's first victory. Kotomitsuki charged forward, while Miyabiyama shifted his position and drove out the ozeki. It's Kotomitsuki's 6th loss. Harumafuji attacked Kyokutenho's throat and then gave an underarm throw to win his 2nd bout. Kaio got Toyonoshima's arm under his and threw him to win. Toyonoshima was clearly in pain holding his arm. The tallest and 2nd tallest clashed against eachother. Koto-o-shu drove Baruto on the ring. Both are 6-1. Chiyotaikai gave thrusts after thrust and pushed out Takekaze. Asashoryu's arm slipped from Yoshikaze's neck but was able to put himself together to win. Hakuho quickly drove out Aminishiki.

6th day
Tochiozan drove out Tokitenku for his 6th win. Dejima charged into Takamisakari but not powerfully enough. The Robocop stopped the former ozeki and forced him out. Goeido banged into Harumafuji and easily won. Goeido won his 5th bout, while the new ozeki lost his 5th. Kisenosato pushed forward and shoved Kaio out. After Kaio was out the ring,Kisenosato gave another unnecessary shove. Koto-o-shu forced down Miyabiyama by the head to his 5th win. Chiyotaikai gave a series of thrusts to defeat Kyokutenho. Baruto got hold of Kotomitsuki's belt with his left and threw the ozeki for his 6th win. Takekaze shifted his position slightly as he challenged Hakuho. But Hakuho kept his eye on Takekaze and drove him down. Asashoryu quickly forced Toyonoshima out.

5th day
Takamisakari shoved Futeno out of the ring for his 2nd win. Goeido pushed and fell as he pushed out Miyabiyama. Baruto drove Toyonoshima out the ring. Kaio cautiously drove Kyokutenho out for his 4th win. Aminishiki moved around Koto-o-shu and drove the Bulgarian out from his back. It's the ozeki's first loss. Chiyotaikai could not move Kisenosato with his shove, and instead the ozeki was driven out. It's Chiyo's first loss. Harumafuji shoved forward to beat Kotoshogiku for his first win. Asashoryu positioned his head below Takefuji and carefully waited until the right moment he found to roll his opponent on the ring. Hakuho drove Yoshikaze on the ring.

4th day
Dejima forced Futeno down for his 3rd win. Hokutoriki pushed down Takamisakari. Koto-o-shu reached out to the back of Takekaze's belt and drove him out. Chiyotaikai gave thrusts to defeat Yoshitake. Other ozeki, however, lost. Kotomitsuki to Kyokutenho. Harumafuji to Kisenosato. Kaio to Baruto. Hakuho struggled against Kotoshogiku slightly but managed to win with an overarm throw. Asashoryu pulled back powerlessly that a loss looked imminent, but he went around the ring to stay in while Miyabiyama went out.

3rd day
Dejima shoved down Aran for his 2nd win. Takamisakari thrust Kokkai down for his first win. The gyoji gave the bout to Kisenosato, but the judges reversed the decision, and gave the win to Baruto. Chiyotaikai shoved Aminishiki's throat and won with a push out. Kotomitsuki struggled, but managed to get hold of Goeido's belt to win with a force out. Harumafuji lost his 3rd bout to Toyonoshima. The new ozeki is having a tough tourney. Kaio moved forward, and shoved Kotoshogiku out. Asashoryu forced Kyokutenho on the dirt. Hakuho quickly drove Miyabiyama out.

2nd day
Yamamotoyama who became the heaviest makuuchi rikishi with 242 kilograms pushed out Toyohibiki for his first win in the highest division. Takamisakari lost again. This time to Aran's push out. Baruto beat Yoshikaze with an overarm throw. Kotomitsuki shoved forward, but at the edge of the ring, Takekaze turned around to shove the ozeki out. It's Kotomitsuki's 2nd loss. Harumafuji attacked Miyabiyama, but Miyabiyama shifted to the side and put the new ozeki down. Kaio banged into Aminishiki and then thrust him down to win his 2nd bout. Koto-o-shu rammed his head into Kisenosato and won with a push out. Chiyotaikai shoved forward the drove Toyonishima out the ring. Hakuho got his hand on Kyokutenho's belt and drove him out powerfully. Asashoryu forced Kotoshogiku on the dirt.

1st day
Tickets were sold out. The arena was filled with an excited crowd. Some of the major bouts. Dejima drove down Asasekiryu. Takamisakari lost to Bushuyama's push out. Kokkai forced out Futeno. Goeido grabbed Wakanosato's body and shoved him out. Baruto himself jumped out the ring as he dpushed out Takekaze. It's Harumafuji's first bout as ozeki. He charged towards Yoshikaze. Yoshikaze shifted to the side and drove out the new ozeki. Kaio's is Kadoban ozeki, or he needs to win 8 bouts otherwise would lose his status. Kaio immediately grabbed Miyabiyama's arm, made the former ozeki turn his back around and shoved Miyabiyama's back to win. Koto-o-shu drove out Kyokutenho. Chiyotaikai shoved Kotoshogiku and then pulled back to drive Koto down. Aminishiki was clearly in control of the bout against Kotomitsuki. Kotomitsuki was driven out. Kisenosato shoved Asashoryu. Asashoryu pushed back and slapped Kisenosato's face, once, twice and won in front of an elated crowd. Hakuho pushed out Toyonoshima.

Pre Tourney highlights
Asashoryu is in the tourney
It was only on Jan 9 or 2 day before the new year tourney Asashoryu said he will be in it. It's widely speculated depending on how he may perform, he may have to retire. The yokozuna is believed to not be in very good shape. During an official practice session he did not win many bouts.

Ama renamed Harumafuji
On the day messengers of the Japan Sumo Association conveyed the promotion of Ama to ozeki or Nov 26,2008, Ama changed his name to Harumafuji. His stable master, Isegahama was former yokozuna Asahifuji. In his speech to accept his promotion, Harumafuji said he will devote all of himself and his soul to the way of sumo.
