Final day
Shodai threw Mitakeumi for his 13th win. He still had a chance for the Emperor's Cup if Tokushoryu lost to Takakeisho. But Tokushoryu fought aggressively against the ozeki and forced him down. Tokushoryu was ranked at the bottom of the makuuchi division. It's the first time since Takaroriki or in 20 years the last in the ranking won the Emperor's Cup. He was in tears after the victory. The 33 years old comes from Nara. He's a graduate of Kindai University. As to other bouts of the day, Kotoshogiku beat Tochiozan for his 7th win. Yutakayama forced down Hokutoriki. Both finished 11-4. Tochinoshin lost to Myogiryu. Both finished 5-10. Takayasu forced down Aoiyama for his 6th win. Asanowaka forced Ryuden on his back.Both finished 10-5. Goeido lost to Oonosho taking his 10th loss.After the tourney, Goeido announced he is retiring.

14th day
The 2 leading rikishi faced eachother. Tokushoryu thrust down Shodai to become the sole leader with 13 win. Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, their daughter Princess Aiko appeared on the balcony seat to watch sumo. Princess Aiko is known to be a sumo fan. They watched Endo lost to Yutakayama. Enho tried to pull away from Daieisho but was driven out. Former ozekis faced eachother. Takayasu threw Tochinoshin. Both are 5-9. Takakeisho pushed hard against Asanoyama. But Asanoyama resisted. Both attempted a throw. They kept inside the ring. Then Asanoyama succeeding in throwing Takakeisho. Takakeisho has lost his hope to win the Emperor's Trophy. Goeido lost to Shohozan, succumbing to his 9th loss.

13th day
Tokushoryu thrust down Yutakayama for his 13th win. Shodai forced out Kagayaki also for his 13th win. Endo forced Okinoumi to fall on his right knee to secure a majority win. Enho went for Abi's foot, picked him up and drove him out. Enho won his 8th bout. Asanoyama and Takarafuji shoved eachother around the ring. In the end, Asanoyama forced out Takarafuji for a majority win. Goeido got hold of Tochinoshin with his head low and powerfully drove out the Georgian. It's Goeido's 5th win. Takakeisho and Takayasu attacked eachother hard. In the end Takakeisho won with a push out, for his 12th win. Tokushoryu and Shodai tie for the lead, followed by Takakeisho.

12th day
Tokushoryu drove down Kagayaki for his 11th win. Kotoshogiku lost to Takanosho succumbing to a majority loss. Tochiozan secured a majority win by driving down Yutakayama. Hokutoriki forced down Endo for his 9th win. Abi attacked Shodai with thrusts but at the verge of the ring, Shodai shifted and forced Abi down for his 11th win. Enho was able to get into Takayasu low and drove down the former ozeki who succumbed to a majority loss. Tochinoshin charged forward against Takakeisho. The ozeki pushed back and threw the Georgian to win his 10th bout. Asanoyama drove out Goeido. With the 8th loss, Goeido will be demoted from ozeki ranking next tourney.

11th day
Kagayaki pushed out Tochiozan for his 9th win. Terutsuyoshi pulled away and thrust down Takanosho for a majority win. Tokushoryu managed to force down Aoiyama first for his 10th win. Yutakayama pushed down Shohozan for his 9th win. Okinoumi drove out Tochinoshin who succumbed to his 6th loss. Tamawashi attacked hard but Hakutofuji managed to in the end drive Tamawashi ut for his 8th win. Shodai struggled but pushed out Daieisho for his 10th win. Enho pulled Asanoyama's arm and forced him out. Both are 6-5. Goeido managed to drive out Takayasu. Both are 4-7. Takakeisho pushed out Takarafuji for his 9th win. The leaders are still Tokushoryu and Shodai.

10th day
Chiyomaru chased Tokushoryu but Tokushoryu managed to thrust him down for his 9th win. Kagayaki thrust out Kotoeiko for his 8th win. Yutakayama pushed out Azumaryu also for his 8th win. Shodai managed to drive out Shohozan to win his 9th bout. Popular Endo lost to Mitakeumi. Both are 6-4. Popular Asanowaka was thrown by Tochinoshin to take his 4th loss. Takayasu managed to thrust down Abi for his 4th win. Takakeisho pushed out Enho to secure a majority win. Goeido lost his 7th bout, driven out from behind by Takarafuji. Tokushoryu and Shodai remain the leaders.

9th day
Tokushoryu drove out Tsurugisho to secure a majority win. Kagayaki pushed out Shimanoumi for his 7th win. Yutakayama forced out Oonosho also for his 7th win. Endo pulled back and lost to Abi taking his 3rd loss. Takarafuji pushed out Takayasu who took his 6th loss. With this loss Takayasu's hope to regain ozeki rank is gone. He needed 10 wins in this tourney. Asanoyama managed to throw Daieiho. Enho pulled Goeido's arm and drove the ozeki out. Shodai shifted a bit, forcing Takakeisho to fall. Shodai clinched a majority win. Tokushoryu and Shodai lead.

8th day
Tokushoryu forced Kotoshogiku to fall to win his 7th bout. Terutsuyoshi lost to Yutakayama. Both are 6-2. Takanosho pushed out Tochinoshin. Enho moved quickly in the bout against Endo. Enho pushed out Endo. It's Endo's 2nd loss. Shodai forced Asanoyama down for his 7th win. Hokutofuji was in control of the bout. He pushed out Takayasu. Takakeisho drove Okinoumi out as he lost his balance. Goeido was forced down by Abi to lose his 5th bout.

7th day
Tochinoshin drove down Takarafuji for his 3rd win. Endo forced Tamawashi to run out of the ring. Mitakeumi managed to get hold of the back of Daieisho's belt to drive him out. Takayasu and Myogiryu stopped fight for a few seconds, watching eachother, than Takayasu pushed Myogiryu out for his 3rd win. Asanowaka pushed forward to drive out Hokutofuji. Goeido struggled but was able to keep himself inside the ring to force out Shodai. Shodai lost his first bout. Takakeisho pushed out Abi for his 6th win. There are 5 tied for the lead. They are Terutsuyoshi, Kagayaki,Shodai, Endo, Takakeisho.

6th day
Shodai forced out former ozeki Tochinoshin to be the only leader. Others who had perfect records as in Terutsuyoshi and Kagayaki lost. Asanoyama drove out Myogiryu. Endo drove down Takayasu. Mitakeumi attacked and pushed Takakeisho. Takakeisho shifted a bit, forced Mitakeumi to fall. Goeido quickly pushed out Tamawashi for his 2nd win.

5th day
Shodai gave a few thrusts to drive out Hokutofuji and keep his record clean. Takayasu lost to Daieisho for his 3rd loss. Asanoyama was driven down by Endo. Mitakeumi was alone on the ring as his opponent for the day, Kakuryu pulled out from an injury. There are no more yokozunas this tourney. Goeido and Okinoumi had to retake their bout. Goeido easily fell and appeared very tired after the bout. It's his 4th loss. Takakesho slightly pulled back forcing Tamawashi to fall. It's the ozeki's 4th win.

4th day
It's announced Hakuho is pulling out as his heel is cracked and in pain. He was supposed to facer Hokutofuji. Kotoshogiku thrust down Chiyotairyu for his 2nd win. Tochinoshin picked up Enho and dropped him outside the ring. It's the former ozeki's 2nd win. Abi gave Asanoyama thrusts after thrust and won his first bout. Shodai drove out Takayasu for his 4th win. Takakeisho drove down Endo for his 3rd win. Goeido threw Daieisho for his first win. Kakuryu powerlessly lost to Myogiryu's push out.

3rd day
Enho kept low and with his righ forced down Meisei for his 2nd win. Takayasu pulled back then thrust down Mitakeumi for his 2nd win. Asanoyama drove out Okinoumi for his 3rd win. Endo forced down Goeido off the ring. Goeido hasn't won a bout yet. Takakeisho gave thrusts and pushed out Daieisho for his 2nd win. Hokutofuji pushed out Kakuryu. Hakuho touched the dirt, succumbing to Myogiryu's thrust and lost. Both yokozuna faced their 2nd loss.

2nd day
Takayasu beats Okinoumi for his first win. Takakeisho faces defeat from Hokutofuji's shoves. Mitakeumi drives out Goeido who's foot has not recovered. Hakuho tries to throw Endo but could not and is instead forced down. Kakuryu thrust down Abi.

1st day
Chiyomaru push out former ozeki Kotoshogiku. Ishiura walks out the ring after Chiyotairyu's thrust. Shohozan drives out former ozeki Tochinoshin in an aggressive fight. Small Enho skillfully gets himself in and out of Takarafuji, gives an underarm throw to win. Tamawashi drive out former ozeki Takayasu. Asanoyama beats Mitakeumi in an aggressive bout. Goeido falls on his hands to Hokutofuji's thrust. Takekeisho powerfully forces out Myogiryu. Endo drives out Kakuryu. Hakuho cautiously fight Daieisho and drives him out.

Asanoyama, who won 2018 New Year's tourney practiced against the retired former yokozuna. The result, on Jan 5, of 17 matches Asanoyama was able to win just one.

Ishiura causes a stir for violence
It came to light that on Jan 4, during practice Ishiura kicked and used his fist to attack a makushita rikishi who fought back. It's reported Hakuho stopped them. The incident was reported to the Sumo Association. Stable master Miyagino was punished with 20 percent salary cut for 3 months. Ishiura's salary is cut 20% for 1 month. The makushita rikishi was subjected to disciplinary action.
