Final day
Abi and Kotonowaka shifted positions several times. In the end Abi drove down Kotonowaka for his 12th win. Hoshoru forced down Aoiyama for his 11th win. Ishiura quickly drove out Tamawashi and won his 11th bout. Ichinojo forced out Tochinoshin. The Monglian clinched a majority win, while the Georgian finished the tourney with a majority loss. Ura pushed out Chiyomaru for his 8th win. Shodai threw Chiyoshoma for his 6th win. The ozeki will have to win a majority the next tourney to keep his rank. Terunofuji faced Mitakeumi. Mitakeumi shoved and drove out the yokozuna for his 13th win. Terunofuji took his 4th loss. It's the 3rd grand tourney victory for Mitakeumi. With this victory, he is expected to be promoted to ozeki.

14th day
Tochinoshin threw Okinoumi for his 7th win. Oonosho pushed out Meisei for his 10th win. Myogiryu returned to the ring after taking a break to recover from an injury. He easily lost to Daieisho. Mitakeumi went forward and shoved to drive out Takarafuji. Kotonowaka forced Takanosho on the dirt to win his 11th bout. Shodai and Hoshoryu had to redo their bout. In the 2nd attempt the Mongolian drove out the ozeki. Shodai lost his 9th bout. Abi moved around and forced out Terunofuji. Both are 11-3. Mitakeumi is the sole leader.

13th day
Tochinoshin drove out Chiyomaru for his 6th win. Ura receives attacks from Chiyoshoma, but on the verge of the ring throws him to win his 7th bout. Mitakeumi gives thrust, prompting Abi's foot out the ring. Shodai is thrown by the neck by Oonosho for a majority loss. Terunofuji drives Takanosho out. Terunofuji, Mitakeumi are the top leaders.

12th day
Ura pushed out Yutakayama for his 6th win. Takarafuji and Ichinojo fought a long bout which lasted close to 3 minutes. In the end the Mongolian pushed out Takarafuji. Oonosho's thrust prompted Mitakeumi to fall on his belly. It's Mitakeumi's 2nd loss. Abi forced out Takanosho for his 10th win. Shodai managed to drive out Hokutoriki for his 5th win. Terunofuji went forward and went out of the ring, while Meisei shifted his position. The yokozuna lost his 2nd bout. Terunofuji, Mitakeumi, Abi are tied.

11th day
Young up and coming Kotonowaka pushed out Takarafuji to secure a majority win. Abi thrust down Ichinojo for his 9th win. Mitakeumi and Shodai fought a competitive bout. In the end Mitakeumi drove the ozeki out. Terunofuji struggled against Chiyoshoma, but managed to drive fellow Mongolian out. Terunofuji and Mitakeumi remain tied, with Abi right behind..

10th day
Takarafuji pushed out Ichiyamamoto to clinch a majority win. So did Abi, by shoving out Okinoumi. Ura managed to force down Daieisho for his 5th win. Mitakeumi pulled back and lost to Hokutofuji. It's his first loss. Shodai was easily forced out by Takanosho for his 6th loss. Teruofuji forced ouot Oonosho. Terunofuji and Mitakeumi tie for the lead.

9th day
Kotoeiko drove out Chiyotairyu for his 7th win. Takarafuji forced down Akua for his 7th win. Abe drove down Myogiryu also for his 7th win. Mitakeumi quickly forced out Okinoumi to keep his record clean. Shodai was forced down the ring by Meisei succumbing to his 5th loss. Terunofuji threw Hokutofuji to secure a majority win.

8th day
Abi lost to Hoshoryu, taking his 2nd loss. Mitakeumi withstood Daieisho's shoves, waiting until the opponent pulled back. Mitakeumi pushed him out to secure a majority win. Ura immediately grabbed Takanosho's foot, prompting his opponent to loose balance. It's Ura's 4th win. Shodai manged to win his 4th bout by forcing out Endo. Terunofuji got hold of Okinoumi's belt and forced him out to win his 7th bout. Mitakeumi remains the sole leader.Following him is Terunofuji.

7th day
Abi attacked Oonosho. But at the verge of the ring, Oonosho force Abi down into a split. It's Abi's first loss. Ura was aggressive. He kept his posture low to drive out Hokutofuji. Mitakeumi drove out Tamawashi. Okinoumi forced out Shodai. It's the ozeki's 4th loss. Terunofuji managed to force out Endo for his 6th win. Mitakeumi is the sole leader, followed by Terunofuji and Abi.

6th day
Abi gave Shimanoumi thrusts then pulled back and with a throw won. Ura lift Kiribaya from behind and drove him out to win his 2nd bout. Mitakeumi quickly shoved Endo out the ring for his 6th win. Shodai powerlessly lost to Ichinojo. Tamawashi attached Terunofuji's throat and forced the yokozuna to touch the dirt first. It's the yokozuna's first loss.

5th day
Tochinoshin picked up Kotoeikouto drive him out and win his 2nd bout. Oonosho was thrust down by Takafuji for his first loss. Abi stretched his long arms to shove Hokutofuji out the ring to keep his record clean. Mitakeumi pushed out Kiribayama for his 5th win. Tamawashi pushed out Shodai. It's the ozeki's 2nd loss. Terunofuji threw Ichinojo for his 5th win.

4th day
Takakeisho withdrew from the tourney after injuring his right foot in the bout against Ura the previous day. Kiribayama was automatically given a win. As to the main bouts of the day, Kaisei forced out Tochinoshin. Abi pushed out Chiyonokuni. Oonosho forced out Hoshoryu. Mitakeumi and Meisei had to redo their bout.In the 2nd attempt Mitakeumi immediately pushed out Meisei. Wakatakekage seemed to be in control of the bout against Shodai. But as he shoved, his foot left the ring before the ozeki's foot touched outside the ring. Shodai won his 3rd bout. Ura shoved and placed pressure on Terunofuji. But the yokozuna's one big thrust threw Ura down on the ring.

3rd day
Abi thrust down Tobizaru for his 3rd win. Oonosho pushed out End for his 3rd win. Mitakeumi forced out Wakatakakage. Daieisho gave thrusts to drive out Shodai to win his first bout. It's Shodai's first loss. Takakeisho and Ura had to redo their bout after pronounced a tie in the first try. In the 2nd face off, Ura banged into the ozeki, shifted position and forced the ozeki down. It's Ura's first win. Terunofuji quicky threw Kiribayama for his 3rd win.

2nd day
Abi drove out Chiyoshoma for his 2nd win. Oonosho forced down Okinoumi. Endo fell on his hands in the bout against Hokutoriki. Mitakeumi pushed out Ichinojo for his 2nd win. Takakeisho charged forward against Meisei and lost control, falling out of the ring. Shodai pushed out Ura who seems to have banged his head outside the ring in the fall. Ura was unable to walk properly after the bout and was wheelchaired out. Terunofuji threw Wakatakakage with his left to win.

First day
There were good quality bouts to kick of the new year tourney. Georgian Tochinoshin forced out immedicately Tsugisho. Abi pushed out Takarafuji while running out the ring. Oonosho forced down Hokutofuji. Endo drove out Okinoumi. Mitakeumi pushed out Ura. Shodai was in danger of being pushed out but on the verge of the ring, he gave Kiribayama and throw to win. Takekeisho charged forward quickly and drove out Wakatakekage. Terunofuji fought a close fight against Daieisho. In the end Daieisho slipped and fell.

Pre Tourney highlight
Police investigating illegal gambling of 2 rikishi
It's reported on Jan 7, police is questioning Hidenoumi and new juryo Shiden. They are suspected of being involved in illegal gambling. Back in 2010, then ozeki Kotomitsuki and former sekiwake Takatoriki were fired from the sumo word due to baseball gambling.

Tagonoura stable members pull out from the tourney
As Hakuho announced on Oct 1, he is no longer fit to perform as yokozuna and retired, Terunofuji is the only yokozuna. It was announced on Jan 5 that 4 belonging to Tagnoura tested positive for COVID-19. Former ozeki Takayasu is a member of the stable and did not test positive but withdrew from the tourney as he is a close contact.
