Final day
Last tourney winner Abi thrust out Tsurugisho to secure a majority win. Daishoho pushed out Aoiyama for his 10th win. Kiribayama managed to force out Ryuden in an over a minute bout for his 11th win. Myogiryu drove out Shodai. Both finished 6-9. Oonosho pulled Hoshoryu's topknot to make him fall.Due to the inappropriate act, the bout was given to Hoshoryu. Takakeisho threw Kotoshoho to win his 12th bout, and the Emperor's Cup for the 3rd tim.

14th day
Kotoshoho got hold of Daieisho's belt and threw him down for his 11th win. Kiribayama forced Oonosho down on his belly. Both are 10-4. Wakatakakage pushed down Shodai. Wakatakakage secured a majority win, while the former ozeki succumbed to a majority loss. Shodai could not even hang on to his sekiwake ranking. Takakeisho shifted position and forced Hoshoryu down for his 11th win. Takakeisho and Kotoshoho tie for the Emperor's Cup.

13th day
Abi gave thrusts but in the end Kotoshoho forced Abi down for his 10th win. Daieisho forced out Hiradoumi for his 9th win. Tobizaru drove Mitakeumi down the ring. Mitakeumi succumbed to a majority loss. Hoshoryu lost to Wakatakakage's throw. Both are 7-6. Ryuden drove out Shodai. It's Shodai's 7th loss. Takakeisho charged forward and strong to drive out Oonosho. They are both 10-3. As a result, 3 tie for the lead. They are Kotoshoho, Takakeisho and Oonosho.

12th day
Kotoshoho threw Nishikigi to win his 9th bout. Oonosho in an agressive bout pushed out Tamawashi for his 10th win. Daieisho gave thrusts and forced out Mitakeumi to secure a majority win. Shodai fought powerfully to drive out Nishikifuji to win his 6th bout. Ryuden forced out Hoshoryu. Both are 7-5. Kiribayama threw Takakeisho down. The ozeki succumbed to his 3rd loss. The sole leader is Oonosho.

11th day
In juryo division, former ozeki Asanoyama lost his first bout. In the makuuchi division, Oonosho threw Kotoshoho for his 9th win. Tamawashi thrusts out Nishikigi to secure a majority win. Mitakeumi pulled back and lost to Ryuden. It's the former ozeki's 6th loss. Hoshoryu was back after missing 1 day to recover from an injury. He managed to drive Nishikifuji out for his 7th win. Kotomowaka pushed Takakeisho down the ring. The ozeki lost his 2nd bout. Takakeisho and Oonosho tie for the Emperor's Cup.

10th day
Kotoshoho and Ura had to redo their bout after the first try was called a draw. In the 2nd challenge, Ura tried to grab Kotoshoho's leg, but instead he was driven down. Kotoshoho secured a majority win. Oonosho went into Nishikifuji and drove him out to win his 8th bout too. Mitakeumi pushed out Kotonowaka for his 5th win. Shodai managed to take Midorifuji out to win his 4th bout. Takakeisho immediately threw Meisei to keep his lead with his 9th win.

9th day
Those contending for the Emperor's Cup have been reduced. Kotoshoho, Aoiyama and Daieisho succumbed to their 3rd loss. Oonosho pushed out Kitanofuji for his 7th win. Abi faced his 4th loss driven out by Midorifuji. Mitakeumi forced out Meisei for his 4th win. Shodai managed to shove down Kiribayama for his 3rd win. Wakamotoharu threw Hoshoryu. The Mongolian took his 3rd loss. After the loss, Hoshoryu was unable to get up immediately and seemed to have injured his foot. Takakeisho charged into Sadanoumi and pushed him out to secure a majority win.

8th day
Kotoshoho drove out Chiyomaru for his 7th win. Others with 6 wins lost. They are Aoiyama, Daieisho. Takakeisho is the only other who added another win in a very aggressive bout against Nishikifuji. The ozeki gave a series of thrusts than drove Nishikifuji down. As to other contenders in the spotlight, last tourney champion Abi pulled back and was pushed out by Kiribayama to take his 3rd loss. Hoshoryu drove out Sadanoumi from behind for his 6th win. Shodai lost his 6th bout, succumbing to Wakamotoharu's shoves. As a result Shodai lost his change to be reinstated as ozeki.

7th day
Aoiyama pushed out Tsurugimine for his 6th win. Kotoshoho drove out Endo for his 6th win. Kotoshoho also won his 6th bout by forcing out Endo. Daieisho gave quick thrusts to push out Sadanoumi for his 6th win. Mitakeumi lost to Kiribiyama succumbing to his 4th loss. Abi forced Hoshoryu to the verge of the ring, then Hoshoryu fought back and won. Both are 5-2. Tamawashi easily forced out Shodai. It's Shodai's 5th loss. Midorifuji aggressively fought against Takakeisho, and both stood to look at eachother for a second, attacked eachother again, and the ozeki threw Midorifuji. Takakeisho won his 6th bout.

6th day
Kotoshoho lost to Takarafuji for his first loss. Aoiyama lost to Oonosho. All the above 4 are 5-1. Mitakeumi forced out Nishikifuji for his 3rd win. Daieisho gave strong thrusts to drive out Kiribayama for his 5th win. Shodai chased Tobizaru and forced him out for his 2nd win. Hoshoryu and Midorifuji appeared to fall from the ring together, but the verdict was Midorifuji's foot remained inside the ring. Hoshoryu took his 2nd loss. Takakeisho fought hard against Abe and won. There are no longer any rikishi with a perfect record.

5th day
Kotoshoho forced down Mitoryu for his 5th win. Aoiyama pulled away then forced dow Ohho for his 5th win. Oonosho lost his first bout to Ryuden. Wakamotoharu drove out Mitakeumi. Both are 2-3. Shodai was pushed out by Meisei. Both are 1-4. Kotonowaka pushed out Takayasu.They are 1-4. Daieisho pushed Hoshoryu down the ring. Both are 4-1. Abi gave a powerful thrust to force Wakatakakage down for his 5th win. Takakeisho and Tamawashi took time to face off. When they did Takakeisho immediately drove out the Mongolian. It's the ozeki's 4th win.

4th day
Oonosho pushed out Endo for his 4th win. Hoshoryu drove out Tamawashi for his 4th win. Daieisho with thrusts pushed out Wakatakakae. Abi forced out Shodai for his 4th win. Takakeisho pushed out Mitakeumi.The former ozeki lost his 2nd bout.

3rd day
Oonosho and Myogiryu had to redo their bout. Oonosho in the end immediately drov out his opponent for his 3rd win. Abi gave Meisei thrust to win his 3rd bout. Hoshoryu got hold of Mitakeumi's belt and forced him out for his 3rd win. Wakatakakage drove out Tobizaru. Shodai pushed out Kotonowaka for his first win. Tamawashi pushed out Takayasu who seemed to be in pain after tumbling down the ring. Takakeisho and Daieisho gave eachother thrusts. The ozeki shifted to the side and drove down Daieisho.

2nd day
Ura fought with thrusts and drove out Hokutofuji for his first win. Abi and Wakamotoharu appeared to fall at the same time but the juries decided Wakamotoharu's hand touched the dirt first and gave Abi the win. Tamawashi gave a powerful shove to push out Myodai. Mitakeumi drove out Wakatakakage. Daieisho gave Shodai thrusts and won. Kiribayama pushed Takayasu down from the ring. Hoshoryu threw Kotonowaka for his 2nd win. Tobizaru forced Takakeisho to fall on his knee. The only ozeki already lost a bout.

First day
The arena this tourney is allowed to seat up to 9000 fans of its 10,000 capacity. Last tourney winner, Abi thrust out Kotonowaka. After a draw, Tamawashi forced out Kiribayama. Former ozeki faced eachother. Shodai who has a chance in being promoted back to ozeki if he wins 10 bouts was pushed out by Mitakeumi. Daieisho attacked Takayasu and won with a push out. Hoshoryu quickly pushed out Tobizaru. Wakatakakage shoved Meisei one direction and another direction, and drove Meisei out. Takakeisho shifted his position slightly and drove out Wakamotoharu.

Terunofuji pulls out 3 tourneys in a row
Japan Sumo Association confirmed Terunofuji pulled out from the new year tourney on Jan 6. He needs more time to recuperate from operating on both his knees. Meanwhile with Terunofuji not taking part, the highest ranking is ozeki Takakeisho. Takekeisho is the only ozeki as others, Shodai lost a majority and Mitakeumi had lost his chance to win back the rank.

Former ozeki returns to juryo
Asanoyama who lost his ranking in 2021, for violating COVID-19 rules, fights in the juryo division, or recovers the rank which gives him a salary.
