Final day
Endo beat Tamawashi in a competitive bout to secure a majority win. Ura pushed out Okinoumi for his 4th win. Hoshoryu threw Kotonowaka, who lost his 4th bout. Abi forced Takayasu to turn his back, driving the former ozeki out. It's Takayasu's 3rd loss. Mitakeumi shifted to the side and forced Takakeisho down. The new ozeki won his 11th bout. Shodai fought a competitive bout against Wakatakakage forced the young sekiwake out. As a result Wakatakakage and Takayasu went into a run off which turned out to be exciting. Their determination to fight fiercely was reflected. As Takayasu shoved, Wakatakakage tried to stay in the ring and gave a throw. On that Takayasu toppled. Wakatakakage became the first new sekiwake in 86 years to win the grand tourney.

14th day
Tochinoshin struggled but was able to drive out Wakamotoharu for his 9th win. Shodai wa able to get hold of Takayasu with his right and forced him down. Shodai secured a majority win and also his ozeki ranking. Kotonowaka quickly forced out Mitakeumi . Takakeisho gave a powerful thrust, then pulled back, giving Wakatakakage a chance to push back and win. Takayasu and Wakatakakage are tied for the lead.

13th day
One of the top contenders Wakatakakage faced Mitakeumi. The new ozeki showed his determination to win, with shoves. Takayasu fought cautiously against Takakeisho, leaping at one point. He got hold of the ozeki's belt with his right and threw him. Kotonowaka attacked Shodai's throat, disabling him from fighting properly. Shodai lost his 6th bout. The sole leader is Takayasu.

12th day
Ishiura showed no signs he has recovered from his injury. He was easily driven out by Takanosho. Wakatakakage was aggressive. He quickly forced Kotonowaka out the ring. Shodai faced fellow ozeki Takakeisho and with his right, drove him out. Takayasu forced out Mitakeumi for his 11th win. Wakatakakage and Takayasu remain the top contenders.

11th day
Tochinoshin defeated Terutsuyoshi to clinch a majority win. Ishiura was back, after missing 6 days. He easily lost to Okinoumi. Wakatakakage went into Takayasu and drove out the former ozeki. It's Takayasu's first loss. Shodai forced Takarafuji on his hand. Shodai won his 6th bout. Abi attacked Mitakeumi. But the new ozeki withstood and forced Abi down. Kotonowaka gave Takakeisho thrusts. The ozeki shifted position to drive Kotonowaka down. Wakatakakage and Takayasu lead together.

10th day
Kotonowaka forced down Daieisho for his 9th win. Takayasu had a long bout against Hoshoryu which in the end he won by driving out the Mongolian. He has not been defeated once yet. Wakatakakage attacked Abi and drove him out to win his 9th bout. Wakatakakage had blood all over his face. Hokutofuji got hold of Mitakeumi's belt and drove out the new ozeki. Takakeisho forced down Takarafuji. Shodai drove out Endo.

9th day
Tochinoshin forced down Kotoshoho for his 6th win. Takayasu pushed, pulled back and took time to finally drive Aoiyama out. The former ozeki's record remains perfect. Kotonowaka fought aggressively, prompting Tobizaru to turn his back. Kotonowaka pushed him out for a majority win. Takakeisho gave thrusts after thrusts, remained under pressure from Endo and lost. Shodai pushed out Hoshoryu. It's Shodai's 4th win. Mitakeumi forced out Tamawashi for a majority win.

8th day
Takayasu took time against Wakamotoharu. In the end, threw him to become the only one this day to clinch a majority win. Wakatakakage forced out Ura. Shodai forced out Kiribayama from his back to win his 3rd bout. Mitakeumi drove down Hoshoryu out the ring. Takakesho pushed then pulled away, thrusting down Oonosho for his 6th win.

7th day
Takayasu gave thrusts and forced out Hokutofuji. Wakatakakage drove down Daieisho for his 6th win. Mitakeumi forced down Oonosho for his 6th win. Takakeisho powerfully pushed out Tamawashi. Shodai withstood Meisei's charge, stopped him and threw him. It's Shodai's 2nd win.

6th day
Terunofuji decides to pull out from the tourney with injuries that will take a month to recover. As to bouts of the day, Tochinoshin forced out Chiyotairyu for his 4th win. Takayasu pushed out Shimanoumi quickly to keep his record clean. Wakatakakage forced down Takanosho for this 5th win. Takakeisho gave strong thrusts and drove out Kiribayama. Tamawashi was too powerful for Shodai. The ozeki lost again. Mitakeumi charged forward and drove out Meisei. Takayasu remains the sole leader.

5th day
Former ozeki Tochinoshin pushed out Kotokuzan for his 3rd win. Another former ozeki Takayasu gave thrusts and forced down Takarafuji for his 5th win. Abi pulled Takanosho's arm and drove him out for his 4th win. Wakatakakage forced out Hoshoryu for his 4th win. Shodai drove Oonosho down for his first win. Kiribayama drove out Mitakeumi. It's the new ozeki's first loss. Takakeisho pushed out Meisei. Tamawashi overpowered Terunofuji by driving the yokozuna out of the ring. Terunofuji lost his 2nd bout. The sole leader is Takayasu.

4th day
Takayasu threw Kotonowaka to win his 4th bout. Endo automatically earned a win as Ishiura withdrew due to an injury sustained the previous day. Mitakeumi pulled back, pulled Takanosho's arm and drove him down. It's the new ozeki's 4th win. Takakeisho pushed out Daieisho. Ura charged into Shodai, made the ozeki lose balance and drove him out from behind. Terunofuji quickly forced out Ichinojo

3rd day
Takayasu charged forward and drove out Kyokushoma. It's the former ozeki's 3rd win. Kototonowaka lifed Ishiura and forced him down the ring. Ishiura could not get up for a while. Takakeisho pushed and pushed but lost balance, losing to Hoshoryu. Shodai was easily driven out by Ichinojo. Daieisho attacked Mitakeumi's throat but the new ozeki, shifted position instead forcing his opponent down. Mitakeumi won his 3rd bout. Ura tried to pull Terunofuji. Both left the ring.The referee gave the bout to Ura. But the judges ruled that Ura's heel left the ring first. The yokozuna was able to avoid another loss.

2nd day
Takayasu threw Sadanoumi to win. Wakatakekage went quick against Oonosho and shoved him down. Abi thrust out Tamawashi. Takanosho pushed out ozeki Shodai. It's Shodai's 2nd loss. Ichinojo easily took Takakeisho out by his belt. Daieisho drove out Terunofuji. It's an upset for the yokozuna.

First day
Tochinoshin immediately pushed down Akua. Takayasu threw Okinoumi to win. Oonosho pushed out Abi powerfully. New ozeki Mitakeumi carefully fought, in the end pushing out Ichinojo. Takakeisho was back after recovering from an injury. He managed to pushed out Ura. Daieisho attacked Shodai's throught and forced the ozeki out. Terunofuji quickly got hold of Hoshoryu's belt and forced the young Mongolian out.

Pre Tourney highlight
The first Osaka grand tournament in 2 years
Last year due to COVID-19, the Osaka tournament was canceled and instead it was held in Tokyo. In 2020, it was held in Osaka but with no fans. This time, it will welcome spectators.

Mitakeumi is ozeki but falls to COVID-19
On Jan 27, messengers from the Japan Sumo Association conveyed to Mitakeumi, he's elected ozeki. The 29 year old accepted the promotion stating he will push forward while keeping in mind how grateful he is. His father and his Filipino mother celebrated the promotion together. Just a few days after, he tested positive for COVID-19 after complaining of with high fever. He was hospitalized for about a week.
