MLB opener in Japan cancelled
It was learned on the morning of Mar 19 in Japan that MLB ruled the cancellation of Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics trip to Japan since there were no assurance of the players safety with a possible war in Iraq. The two teams were expected to play exhibition games against Japanese teams on Mar 22 and 23, and open the season at the Tokyo Dome on Mar 25, plus play another game.
Michiyo's Note: Not only were Japanese fans looking forward to seeing Ichiro, Kazuhiro Sasaki and Shige Hasegawa play in Japan, but they too said they were excited about playing in their home country. It's too bad, but what can we do. I was planning to cover a game for work and attend another one simply as a fan.

Kokubo to miss majority of season
Hiroki Kokubo of the Hawks who had injured his right knee during spring training flew to the US to be examined under Dr Frank Jobe. The result on Mar 18 was that he'd need to undergo surgery, and will take 6 months to recover.

Rose leaves Marines
On Feb 19, Bobby Rose announced that he's left the Marines as he is not motivated to play. His decision came during spring camp, surpising fans. He has not played professionally for 2 years, but the Marines expected him to play clean up.

Giants with Petagine
From the very first day of the Giants camp in Miyazaki on Feb 1, Roberto Petagine, who was acquired from the Swallows already vigorously swung the bat.
