HIDEKI MATSUI WITH THE NEW YORK YANKEES IN 2003
October 25:World Series
The Yankees had to win this game or else the World Series would finish. But the Marlins scored first. It was in the 5th inning. Fans were especially disappointed that Jorge Posada could not kill Alex Gonzalez at home. Then in the 6th, the Yankees erred and that resulted in the Marlins scoring on a sacrifice fly. Matsui had no hits. The Yankees lost 0 to 2, and the World Series title went to the Florida Marlins.

October 23:World Series
Matsui was moved up in the starting line up to bat 4th. But he could not hit himself to base even once. And David Wells accident, leaving the mound after the 4th inning due to a pain hurt the team. Although Jason Giambi tried to help the team in the 9th inning with a home run, it was not enough. The Yankees lost 4 to 6.

October 22:World Series
It's Roger Clemen's last starting game. He recovered from the 2nd inning. He pitched 7 innings. Meanwhile the Yankess caught up in the 9th inning. In the 11th Matsui was walked. In the 12th, the Florida Marlins Alex Rodriguez homered a game winning run and finished the game 4 to 3 for the Marlins. Matsui had just one base hit during the game.

October 21:World Series
In the 4th inning, Matsui was hit by a pitch and went to first to load the bases. Jorge Posada was walked so the Yankees scored a tie. Pouring rain temporary put the game on a hold. In the 6th, Matsui went to first on a walk. And in the 8th, with runners on first and third, Matsui was up to bat, and hit to the left for the team to earn a run ahead of the Florida Marlins. And in the the end, the Yankees won 6 to 1.

October 19:World Series
A wonder, by Matsui in the first inning. He was up to bat, with runners on first and third. After a 3 ball pitch, Matsui swung the ball hard off Florida Marlins' starter Mark Redman. The ball went into the center stand. Yankee Stadium went wild. And even when Jorge Posada was up to bat, the stadium was still rocking to the drama. Matsui became the first Japanese to homer in the World Series. Adding to the excitement, Alfonso Soriana blasted a 2 run homer in the 4th inning. Andy Petite held on well too. The Yankees won 6 to 1.

October 18:World Series
Matsui hit 5th in the starting line up, to become only the 2nd Japanese to play in the World Series. And he did well. He had 3 base hits. But unfortunatenly, there were no runners for the 2, and noone was in the scoring position for the other. Although his teammate Bernie Williams homered, the Yankees lost the game 2 to 3 against the Florida Marlins.

October 16:Championship Series
Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens started against eachother again. Clemens, however was in bad shape that by the 4th inning, the Red Sox lead by 4 runs. However, the Yankees got a spiritual lift with Jason Giambi's 2 homers. In the 8th inning, Matsui contributed with a double, which lead to Jorge Posada's hit. Matsui came home to become the runner to tie the game. And the game was dramatically wrapped up with a homer by Aaron Boone in the 11th inning. The Yankees clinched the AL title for the 39th time in a 6 to 5 game.

October 15:Championship Series
Matsui had 2 base hits, but he was unable to directly score RBIs. In fact, he was seen as a cause of defeat. In the 7th inning, he caught a ball off the outfield wall. But he hurled it way beyond third. Of course the Boston Red Sox scored. In the end, the Red Sox won 9 to 6.

October 14:Championship Series
In the 4th inning, Matsui got himself on base on a grounded ball. In the 8th, with runners on first and third with one out, Matsui smashed the ball towards pitcher, He didn't make it to first, but a runner came home. The Yankees clinched the game 4 to 2 for its 3rd win in the series.

October 13:Championship Series
On Oct 12, the game was rained out. And starting this game for the Boston Red Sox, Tim Wakefield. Matsui could not get a base hit off his knuckleball. The Yankees lost 2 to 3.

October 11:Championship Series
Runners were on first and third when Matsui was up to bat in the 4th inning. He doubled off Pedro Martinez and helped the Yankees take the lead over the Boston Red Sox. Although the 2 teams went head over heals over Martinez and Roger Clemens' dangerous pitches, the Yankees clinched the game 4 to 3.

October 9:Championship Series
In the 5th inning, with runner on 2nd with 2 outs, Matsui was on. He hit the ball between first and 2nd, and the runner came home. But Matsui who attempted to advance to 2nd was taken out. And with a Nick Johnson's 2 run homer, the Yankees this time defeated the Boston Red Sox 6 to 2.

October 8:Championship Series
In the 2nd inning, Matsui managed to hit off Boston Red Sox's Tim Wakefield's knuckleball. In the 7th, he with a sacrificed fly helped the team to earn one RBI. But it wasn't enough. In the end the Yankees lost 2 to 5.

October 5:Playoffs
Matsui contributed again. In the 4th inning, with runners on first and third, Matsui doubled. Bernie Williams came home. In that inning, the Yankees hit in 6 RBIs and in the end defeated the Minnesota Twins 8 to 1. The Yankees secured the playoffs to advance to the championship series.

October 4:Playoffs
In the 2nd inning with Bernie Williams on 3rd, Matsui slammed a high pitch into the right stand. It's his team's first 2 RBIs. He had a base hit to center too. His team won 3 to 1 over the Minnesota Twins.

October 2:Playoffs
Matsui got on base once on a walk, but otherwise he did not have a hit. Still his team was able to win this time 4 to 1 over the Minnesota Twins.

September 30:Playoffs
Matsui started in the game and in the 2nd inning hit himself on base. But his team got messy out in the field losing runs. Matsui hit to the left in the 9th inning which was just short of becoming a home run. The Yankees lost to the Minnesota Twins 1 to 3.

September 28
Matsui played his final game of the regular season. He's played in all 163 games. In this game, he was a designated hitter, and grounded the ball to center. The Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 1.

September 23
Matsui contributed. In the 6th inning, Matsui hit Jason Giambi home helping the team extend its lead. But it was Giambi who drove in a decisive grand slam to take the Yankees to a 7 to 0 win over the Chicago White Sox, and also securing the AL East title. It's the Yankees 6th AL East title in a row. For Matsui, it was his first time to be drenched in champagne.

September 22
Matsui drove 2 base hits. One in the 2nd, another in the 9th. The Chicago White Sox, however, prevented the Yankees from clinching the AL East title. In the 10th inning, Magglio Ordonez slammed a 3 run homer to defeat the Yankees 6 to 3.

September 21
Matsui tripled for the first time in the US. He also earned an RBI. The Yankees beat the Tamba Bay Devil Rays 6 to 0.

September 20
Matsui had only 1 hit in 3 at bat but his team beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7 to 1 and secured its place in the playoff.

September 19
In the 2nd inning Matsui came home after being walked. In the 4th inning, he had a lucky popped up hit The Yankees won 2 to 1 over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

September 17
In the 2nd inning, Matsui swung a line drive hit to the left. In the 4th inning, with runners on first and third, Matsui smacked the ball to the pitcher. With that base hit, he gained an RBI. The Yankees, however, lost to the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 5.

September 16
In the 6th inning with runners on second and third, Matsui grounded the ball. But he was not out. The play was called an erro. And a runner came home. He fielded well that inning by killing a runner trying to advance to second. In the 7th inning with bases loaded, Matsui hit in 2 runners home. Matsui contributed well in a 6 to 3 game against the Baltimore Orioles.

September 15
In the 6th inning with a runner on second, Matsui managed a hit to the left. He earned his 100th RBI. The Yankees overwhemled the Baltimore Orioles 13 to 1.

September 14
Matsui could not hit, neither could he run well on base, probably due to the collision the day before. His team lost 2 to 5 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. After the game Matsui experienced the unusual, he had to dress himself in a leopard design hat, and outfit because his clothes were taken away.

September 13
The Yankees played a double hitter. Matsui doubled, and then singled to center. In the 7th inning, with the bases loaded, Matsui grounded the ball. He rammed into the pitcher and hurt himself and did not play the rest of the game which the Yankees won 6 to 5 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. But in the game later this day, he played, but could not hit himself on base. The Yankees won that game too 6 to 3.

September 12
Matsui was on with runners on first and second in the first inning. He had a base hit. But Jason Giambi was out at home. So Matsui failed to earn an RBI. The Yankees managed to win 10 to 4 over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

September 11
With a runner on 2nd, Matsui hit to the center in the 4th inning. But the runner was called out at home. So Matsui lost a chance to earn an RBI. He had a base hit in the 6th inning too. The Yankees again defeated the Detroit Tigers 5 to 2.

September 10
Matsui had a good start. In the first inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he doubled. He was the lead off batter in the 4th inning. Matsui homered to the left. It's his first home run in about a month. He showed a great catch in the foul area in the 9th inning. The Yankees overwhelmed the Detroit Tigers 15 to 5.

September 9
In the 2nd inning, Matsui showed a super catch out in the field. In the 8th inning, with the Yankees leading by a run, Matsui hit a sacrifice fly. His team won 4 to 2 over the Detroit Tigers.

September 8
In the first inning, with bases full, Matsui was up to bat. He drove the ball to left field. Two runners came home. In the 3rd inning Matsui grounded the ball past 3rd, and it turned out to be a double. In the 4th, he earned another RBI by hitting to the left. The Yankees won 9 to 3 over the Toronto BlueJays.

September 7
In the 7th inning, the ball Matsui batted hit against the outfield wall. He made it to 2nd. In the end, the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 3 to 1.

September 6
For the first time in many games Matsui had multiple hits. The first was in the 5th inning, he hit to center. In the 7th, he hit to the right. But his team had a devastating game losing 0 to 11 to the Boston Red Sox.

August 29
In the first inning,runners were on second and third, Matsui him them both home. But he could not contribute thereafter. His team lost to the Boston Red Sox 5 to 10.

August 26
Matsui was removed from the starting line-up. But he did get to play. From the 9th inning, he was out in the field. He batted too, getting himself on base. But the Yankees had a devastating loss of 2 to 13 against the Chicago White Sox.

August 25
The no-hit game for Matsui the day before had prompted many to view him as being tired, and could be removed from the starting line-up. But in the 8th inning, he had a 2 base hit, which had led to the Yankees scoring runs to secure its win over the Baltimore Orioles 5 to 2.

August 23
In 2 days before this, Matsui could not hit himself on base. At last, on this day, he hit to the right. But that was all. The Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles 2 to 7.

In the 6th inning, Matsui hit an RBI. The Yankees again defeated the Kansas City Royals 6 to 3.

In the 3rd inning Matsui hit home a runner. Although it was a double, Bernie Willams didn't quite make it. He was killed at home. In the 8th inning, Matsui hit to center. The Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 11 to 6.

August 17
Matsui did not hit himself on base, but he earned an RBI in the 4th inning by grounding the ball. The runner on third came home. The Yankees won 8 to 0 over the Baltimore Orioles.

August 16
Matsui helped the team with a base hit to clinch the lead from the Baltimore Orioles. He was, however, killed at first later. In the close game, the Yankees in the end won in the 12th inning 5 to 4.

August 15
Matsui hit skillfully towards the left. He stole to 2nd, for the first time this season. The Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles again 6 to 4.

August 14
Matsui had a base hit, and earned an RBI through a sacrifice fly. But what was most impressive, he caught a difficult fly in the 7th inning, which prevented the Baltimore Orioles from scoring. The Yankees won 8 to 5.

August 13
In the 7th inning, Matsui hit to the left field. But that was his only base hit. The Yankees had a devastating loss of 0 to 11 against the Kansas City Royals.

August 12
Matsui faced his former teammate in Japan, Darrell May. In the 4th inning, he hit to center. But that was all. The Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6 to 0.

August 11
Matsui played well. He had a double. In the 5th inning, he blasted his 15th home run to give the team a lead. In the 6th inning, he dived for a nice catch. In the 7th, he hit home Bernie Williams. But the Yankees in the end lost to the Kansas City Royals 9 to 11.

August 10
In the 4th inning, Matsui hit to the left. Then from third, he came home. But the Seattle Mariners thereafter took over the lead, and the Yankees lost 6 to 8.

August 9
In the 5th inning, Matsui drove the ball to right field. But that was all. The Yankees lost to the Seattle Mariners 1 to 2.

August 8
In the 2nd inning, Matsui homered to make the game a tie. And the Yankees thereafter took the lead. In the end the Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 9 to 7.

August 7
With runners on first and 3rd in the 5th inning, Matsui hit a sacrifice fly and earned an RBI. He showed a nice catching slide out in the field making up for his rather embarrassing plays in the past games. The Yankees beat the Texas Rangers 7 to 5.

August 6
Matsui hit himself on base in the 2nd inning. In the 5th, he errored out in the field. The Yankees lost to the Texas Rangers 4 to 5.

August 5
In the first inning, Matsui slammed a 2 run homer. It's his 13th home run of the year. The Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers 6 to 2.

August 3
Matsui hit himself on base in the 9th inning. But he was unlucky in the end. The Oakland Athletics clinched the game in the bottom of that inning, when he could not properly react to the ball hitting the fence behind him. The Athletics won the game 2 to 1.

August 2
Matsui blasted a home run in the 5th inning, elating his fans after playing 2 games without a hit. But he was bad out in the field. He erred twice. His team in any case beat the Oakland Athletics 10 to 7.

July 30
The bases were loaded, and Matsui's turn came in the first inning. He hit the ball to left even though his bat broke. And 2 runners came home. In the 6th, he had a sacrifice fly. He hit a double in the 8th. The Yankees defeated the Anaheim Angels 8 to 0.

July 29
With runners on 1st and 3rd in the first inning, Matsui slammed a line drive base hit to right. Bernie Williams came home. He hit to center in the 3rd inning which turned out to be a double. Then in the 7th, Matsui blasted his 11th home run. The Yankees beat the Anaheim Angels 6 to 2.

July 27
Matsui played 2 previous games without a hit. This time, he stood out. In the 3rd inning, he hit to center. In the 6th he had a lucky base hit. But the Yankees in the end lost 4 to 6 against the Boston Red Sox.

July 24
It's Matsui's 100th game this season. Matsui is the only one in his team who's played in all games so far. In the 6th inning, with runner on first and 2nd, Matsui hit the ball passed the pitcher and a runner came home. The Yankees however lost to the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 5.

July 23
With the game a tie Matsui hit a runner home. And the Yankees in the end won 4 to 2 over the Baltimore Orioles.

July 21
Matsui hit to the right. But it did not help the Yankees. It lost to the Toronto BlueJays 8 to 0 in a game halted due to rain after the 8th inning.

July 20
Matsui was walked twice. He also hit to right. The Yankees won 7 to 4 over the Cleveland Indians.

July 19
In the 8th inning, Matsui had a hit to the left. That was all. His team beat the Cleveland Indians 7 to 4.

July 18
In the 2nd inning Matsui doubled. He then made it home. In the 6th inning with Bernie Williams on 2nd he had a base hit. The Yankees won 10 to 4 over the Cleveland Indians.

July 17
Matsui could not perform well with the bat, until the 9th inning. The Yankees were tied with the Cleveland Indians at that point. Matsui was up to bat. At the 2nd pitch, he banged, slammed the ball. It's a homerun to finish the game 5 to 4 for the Yankees. It's for the first time he hit a "sayonara" home run in the US Major Leagues.

All Star Game
Matsu garnered the 3rd most votes to play in the All Star Games in Chicago on July 15. He was 7th in the starting line up. In the 2nd inning, he got himself on base with a hit to left. In the end, his American League clinched the game 7 to 6 over the National League.

July 13
Matsui for the first time in his baseball career played designated hitter. In the first inning he doubled but that was all. His batting average fell to .299. The Yankees however beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6 to 1.

July 12
Matsui had a line drive hit to the left in the 9th inning, That was all. His team lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 3 to 10.

July 11
Matsui had 2 hits and an RBI. The Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8 to 5.

July 9
In the first inning with bases loaded, Matsui struck out. Matsui played a no hitter 2 games in a row. But the Yankees won 6 to 2 over the Cleveland Indians.

July 7
It was only in the 9th inning Matsui made a hit. He struggled against Boston Red Sox's Pedro Martinez before that. This base hit was a worthy one. He eventually got home, clinching the game 2 to 1 over the Red Sox.

July 6
Matsui hit a double to get a runner home in the 1st inning. In the 3rd, he had another 2 base hit. The Yankees won this time 7 to 1 over the Boston Red Sox. And the good news this day was, Matsui was chosen by fans to play in the Major League all star game. He's the first outfielder rookie since Joe DiMaggio to win the honor.

July 5
In the 2nd inning, Matsui hit to right. In the 4th, it was to left, and again to the left in 8th inning. So he had 3 hits in all. But the Yankees again lost to the Boston Red Sox 2 to 10.

July 4
In the first inning, Matsui hit a Jason Giambi home. In the 3rd, he had a base hit. However the Yankees had a devastation loss of 3 to 10 to the Boston Red Sox.

July 1
The previous game, Matsui did not have a base hit. In this game, in the 2nd inning, he hit to right. Then in the 9th, he hit to center. But his team lost to the Baltimore Orioles 3 to 7. That day, there was good news for Matsui, He was awarded the weekly rookie award. The next day he was named for the monthly rookie award.

June 29
It was in the 3rd inning, with the game a tie, Matsui homered. It's at the same time his 100th hit of the season. The Yankees beat the NY Mets again 5 to 3.

June 28
Matsui played a double header. In the first game held at Yankees Stadium, Matsui smashed a grand slam. He also had an RBI earning base hit. He was on base 4 times in all, hit by a walk and a walk. The Yankees won 7 to 1. The 2nd game was played at Shea Stadium. Matsui had 4 hits,including an RBI. He was in great shape. The Yankees actually seemed to be at a shut out win pace, but in the end clinched the game 9 to 8.

June 27
In the first inning, Matsui doubled to earn 2 RBIs. In the 6th, he swang a line drive hit. The Yankees defeated the NY Mets 6 to 4 before an audience of more than 55,000.

In the first inning, Matsui hit in runners with a 2 base hit. In the 7th, he hit to right. The Yankees won 8 to 4 over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

In the 2nd inning, Matsui had a base hit. In the 4th, with bases loaded, Matsui made it to first, thus earning an RBI. In the 9th, Matsui was hit by a pitch in his leg. He was 2 in 4. His tame was able to clinch the game from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 10 to 9.

June 23
In the 5th inning, with runners on first and 3rd, Matsui hit the ball to center. He earned an RBI. In the 8th inning, he ran into the cushioned wall to catch a difficult fly. But the Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 2 to 4.

June 22
It was the 3rd day of the subway series. Actually 2nd, because what was supposed to be the second day was rained out. Matsui in the 5th got on base. He was able to get home. In the 7th, Matsui hit a homerun to catch up with the NY Mets. In the end, the Yankees won 7 to 3.

June 17
For the first time since his high school days Matsui played a double header. In the first game, he hit to center in the 9th. The Yankees lost 2 to 11 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. In the 2nd game, he was 4th in the line up. In the 5th inning, he hit home a runner, contributing to the team's 10 to 2 win this time.

June 15
Matsui started out the game poorly, disappointing fans on prompting a double play. But in the 6th inning, he hit home a runner on 2nd. In the 8th, he grounded to centerfield. The Yankees defeated the St Louis Cardinals again 5 to 2.

June 14
In the first inning, with bases loaded, Matsui was up to bat. He slammed the ball and cleaned the bases. He earned 3 RBIs. Then in the 2nd inning, he again hit in a runner for another RBI. The Yankees overwhelmed the St Louis Cardinals 13 to 4.

June 13
It was in the 2nd inning, Matsui blasted a home run to place the Yankees ahead of the St Louis Cardinals. He had another hit later. Most significant on the day was whether Roger Clemens can achieve his 300th career win. He pitched 7 innings and was credited for the team's 5 to 2 win against the Cardinals.

June 12
After a disappointing no-hit game the previous day, Matsui was different. In the 2nd inning he grounded to center to get himself on base. In the 4th, a line drive hit to the right which gave him an RBI. Then in the 8th, he won't been out at first, if the ball didn't bounce off the base. It put off the Houston Astros and he made it on base. On Soriano's bat, Matsui came home and with that, the Yankees beat the Astros 6 to 5. It was a nice 29th birthday for Matsui.

June 10
Matsui in the 6th inning doubled. He proceeded to 3rd. And on Raul Mondesi's grounded ball that went to 3rd, he was off the base, and looked at 3rd to go back. But as he was about to be tagged, he escaped, and ran to home base successfully. In the 8th, with a runner on 3rd, he hit home an RBI. In all, Matsui had 3 hits. His team put a halt to its losing streak by defeating the Houston Astros 5 to 3.

June 8
Matsui got base on a grounded ball, and he doubled too. He experienced his first hit by the ball. The Yankees, however, lost 7 to 8 to the Chicago Cubs.

June 7
In the 5th inning, Matsui blasted a home run. In the 8th, he hit to center, and also another base hit in the 9th. But his team lost to the Chicago Cubs 2 to 5.

June 6
This time, Matsui had no hits in twice at bat. He was walked twice. But the Yankees beat the Chicabo Cubs 5 to 3.

June 5
Matsui was demoted to 7th in the line-up. Afterall, he was not contributing with the bat. But he was different, or rather he at last, was revitalized. Matsui smashed a 2 run home run in the 3rd inning. He doubled in the 5th inning on which Raul Mondesi came home. In all he had 4 hits. The Yankees defeated the Cincinnatti Reds 10 to 2.

June 3
It's the first time Matsui plays in the interleague game. He was not able to hit well. And his team in the end 3 to 4 to the Cincinnatti Reds.

June 1
It was only in the 9th inning, Matsui got himself on base. It was on a double to left. He, for the first time, went up to bat 8 times in all. Although he didn't contribute, his team, in the 17th inning beat the Detroit Tigers 10 to 9. After the game Matsui told reporters that he finds fault with his batting skill.

May 31
Matsui's performance was upsetting. He not only did not get any base hit. In the 7th inning, he dropped a flyball, and that has made way for the Tigers to clinch the game. The Yankees lost 2 to 4.

May 30
In the first inning, Matsui hit to center. In the third, with runners on 2nd and 3rd. He wa out but a runner came home so he earned an RBI. The Yankess beat the Detroit Tigers 6 to 0.

May 28
In the 2nd inning with runners on first and third, Matsui slugged the ball to the left, getting both home. And in the 9th inning, with the game a tie, Matsui again doubled. The Boston Red Sox decided to fill the bases. But on a walk, Matsui came home to clinch the game 6 to 5.

May 27
Matsui in the 8th inning at last grounded the ball to center, and got himself on base. The Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 11 to 3. But Yankees owners was quoted to have expressed displeasure in Matsui's performance so far. Matsui told reporters, that its true he hasn't hit many home runs, so it can't be helped if negative articles are written about him.

May 25
Matsui hit himself to first twice, but his team lost to the Toronto BlueJays 3 to 5.

May 23
Matsui was back to play 5th in the line-up.His position out in the field changed to center. He didn't do well. He struck out, succumbed to a double play. It was a no hit day. His team lost too 2 to 6 to the Toronto Blue Jays and fell from first place in the league.

May 22
It's the first time in his baseball career Matsui was 2nd the starting line up. Skipper Jim Torre apparently shuffled the line up since Bernie Williams was out due to injury. Matsui at that position had a 2 base hit. He said he almost forgot that he was hitting 2nd when his turn came next, thus unable to concentrate on pitches. But he had another base hit to left. The Yankees, however, lost to the Toronto BlueJays 3 to 8.

May 21
Matsui was not able to get himself on base. But he contributed out in the field. It was in the 9th inning with a runner on second. And the Yankees 4 to 2 over the Boston Red Sox gave Roger Clemens his 299th career win.

May 19
Matsui hit the ball to the right to get on base in the first inning. He grounded the ball to 3rd but made it to first base in the final inning. He did have difficulty out in the field as it was the first time for him to play in Fenway Park. The Yankees in any case beat the Boston Red Sox 7 to 3.

May 16
In the 4th inning, Matsui was up with a runner on second. He swung him hom. He was unable to contribute in the crucial 9th inning with bases loaded. Then in the 11th, with a runner on first, he had a 2 base hit. But the runner couldn't make it back home. In the end the Yankees lost 5 to 8 to the Texas Rangers.

May 14
In the 6th inning, Matsui got himself on base. In the 8th, with runners on first and second, Matsui swung the ball to the right, and Derek Jeter came home. However, his team lost again to the Anaheim Angels 3 to 5.

May 13
For the first time in 3 games, Matsui gave a base hit. But it was just one hit. The Yankees could not celebrate Derek Jeter's comeback game with a win. It lost to the Anaheim Angels 3 to 10.

May 9
Matsui got to first twice on grounded hits but the Yankees lost to the Oakland Athletics 2 to 7.

May 8
In the 3rd inning with bases loaded, Matsui batted a base hit and a runner came home to tie with the Seattle Mariners. There after the Yankees line up blasted, batting in a total 10 runs. In the 8th inning he had a double. The Yankees overwhelmed the Mariners 16 to 5.

May 7
In the 4th inning, Matsui hit a 2 base hit into bouncing and into the stands. It paved the way for the team to earn a run. Then in the 6th inning, with a runner on first Matsui hit a line drive into the stands. It's a 2 run home run. His team won for the first time in 3 games, beating the Mariners 7 to 2.

May 6
Matsui for the first time played in Safecco Field. In the 5th inning, with bases loaded, he was up to bat. But he grounded the ball and ended that inning. In the 8th, and 9th innings he got base hits, and earned one RBI. However, the Yankees lost to the Seattle Mariners 7 to 12.

May 4
Matsui had one base hit again. But his team lost its 2nd game in a row to the Oakland Athletics in a 0 to 2 game.

May 2
Matsui performed well on the field and at bat. He had 2 base hits. One was a double which earned him an RBI. The Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 5 to 3.

May 1
Matsui's first at bat succumbed to a double play. He next had a base hit. But in the 8th inning with the bases full, he struck out. Still the Yankees clinched the game from the Seattle Mariners 2 to 1.

April 30
With runners on 1st and 2nd in the first inning, Matsui was on. He batted in a run. The Yankees had more runs due to Raul Mondesi's grand slam. Matsui played well out in the field, catching a difficult fly. The Yankees won this time 8 to 5 over the Seattle Mariners.

April 29
Matsui went up to greet the Mariners Ichiro before the game was on. It was a dream scene for Japanese baseball fans. As for the game, Matsui, in the 9th inning at last got himself on base. He had a hit off Shigetoshi Hasegawa. However, the Yankees lost to the Mariners 0 to 6.

April 25
Matsui was walked once and also had a base hit. The Yankees managed to win 3 to 2 over the Texas Rangers.

April 24
Matsui had 2 hits and an RBI. But the Yankees lost to the Anaheim Angels 2 to 6.

April 23
In the past 2 games Matsui had no hits. This game, he had no hits until the 9th inning, when he finally got himself on base. The Yankees meanwhile continue to win. It beat the Anaheim Angels 9 to 2.

April 20
Matsui did play, but only from the 6th inning. Still it was good enough for him to extend his consecutive game appearance record since playing for the Tokyo Giants. He was a pinch runner. Then he had a 2 base hit. The Yankees won 8 to 2 over the Minnesota Twins.

April 19
Matsui continues to show that he is consistent at bat. He hit a runner home in the first inning. The Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 4 to 2. But there are reports that Matsui will not play in the next game.

April 18
Matsui advanced a runner and got himself on base in the 6th inning. Then in the 9th he double, bringing a runner back home. The Yankees overwhelmed the Minnesota Twins 11 to 4.

April 17
The bases were loaded in the 6th inning. And Matsui slammed the ball for 2 RBIs. His contribution helped the team win 4 to 0 over the Toronto Blue Jays.

April 16
Matsui got himself on base with his bat, and was walked. He couldn't contribute to the game. The Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 6 to 7.

April 15
It was a quiet day for Matsui. He did have a base hit, but he wasn't living up to expectation when he was signaled to a run and hit. But the Yankees won again, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5 to 0.

April 14
Matsui was up to bat in the 6th inning, with the game a tie and 2 runners on base. He slugged the ball and it formed a big arch into the upper deck of Yankees Stadium. It was a big 3 run homer. His team had a close win of 10 to 9 over the Toronto Blue Jays.

April 13
Matsui was walked, but no base hits. The Yankees lost 1 to 2 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

April 12
The stage was set again for Matsui. It's in the 9th inning with the game a tie. Bernie Williams was walked, loading the bases. Matsui slammed the ball to the left field, finishing the game. It's his first "sayonara" hit. The Yankees won 5 to 4 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Another Matsui related news released that day--the bat with which he blasted his first homer--a grand slam will be entered in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

April 10
It was in the 3rd inning, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Matsui swung the pitch slightly outside. With this hit, 2 runners came home. In fact with that hit, the team won 2 to 0 over the Minnesota Twins.

April 9
Matsui had for the first time this season finished a game with no hits. His batting average fell to .265. But his team defeated the Minnesota Twins 2 to 1.

April 8
The Yankees delayed its opener in New York by a day due to heavy snow. This day marked Matsui's NY debut. It was a remarkable debut. In the 4th inning, he caught up with a one bound hit on the right, to prevent the team from getting hurt. In the 5th, Bernie Williams was walked and with bases loaded, Matsui was on. The count was 3 to 2, and Matsui smashed the ball to the stands. His first homer with the MLB was a grand slam. The Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 7 to 3.

April 6
Matsui stretched his consecutive game base hit to 6. The Yankees defeated the Devil Rays 10 to 5. The team is ready to play its first game in NY after this.

April 5
Matsui showed a great base run, From first, after he got himself on base, ran all the way to slide to home base. He had in all 2 hits, and an RBI. The Yankees, however, lost its first game of the season to the Devil Rays in a 5 to 6 game.

April 4
Matsui was walked to start with. Then he had a base hit. But thereafter he was unable to get on base nor support the team with his bat. But his teammates contined to hit well, defeating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 12 to 2.

April 2
The ball Matsui slammed flew deep into the outfield and bounced off the top edge of the fence. It was just a few inches from becoming a home run. He had another double, and earned an RBI when he grounded a ball, on which a runner came home. The Yankees beat the Blue Jays 9 to 7.

April 1
Matsui had a base hit and earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly. He showed he was good at base running too. But it was clear he was trying hard to contribute to the team rather than play freely for himself to slam the ball high and up. The Yankees won again 10 to 1.

March 31
Hideki Matsui played clean up in his debut game with the Yankees at the Sky Dome. In the first inning he smacked the first pitch to him by the Blue Jays Roy Halladay. And he drove in the team's first RBI of the season, obviously his first RBI in the US Major Leagues. He was able to withstand the pressure from the BlueJays which printed an ad the day before labeled "Boo Matsui". The shock,however, Derek Jeter was carried out of the ball park in the 3rd inning running into his opponent's catcher. The Yankees won 8 to 4.

Matsui homer's in first exhibition game
Hideki Matsui started in the preseason exhibition match against the Cincinnati Reds in Florida on Feb 27. In his first at bat, he grounded the ball and was out at first. But the 2nd time was different. He fouled Jimmy Anderson's pitches, and then slammed the ball which left the ball park. It was a 2 run homer. This game, even though was on at 3 am Japan time, was broadcast live on two TV channels in Japan.

Matsui begins official spring training
Hideki Matsui started his first spring camp with the New York Yankees on Feb 19 in Tampa, Florida. There were reported 150 people of the media. And what's been unheard of is, that Matsui's first days in camp were shown live on Japanese TV.
