Chiyonofuji dies of pancrease cancer
The great yokozuna passed away on 31 July. He was reported actively training sumo wrestlers during the Nagoya tourney. So it was a sudden death. A big loss to the sumo world.

Final day
Takanoiwa drove out Yoshikaze for his 12 win and won his first award. Takarafuji shifted position and forced down Tochiozan. Terunofuji forced Kasei on the dirt and averted the danger of losing his ozeki rank. Goeido moved desperately, but he lost control and turned his back towards Kisenosato. Kisenosato won his 12th bout while Goeido ended the tourney with a majority loss. Harumafuji immediately went low against Hakuho to gain a favorable position. Hakuho did not have power to resist. Harumafji drove his rival yokozuna out. Harumafuji won the Emperor's Cup for the 8th time.

14th day
Takanoiwa won an aggressive bout against Takarafuji for his 11th win. Takayasu pushed out Terunofuji for his 10th win. Terunofuji has to win the final day to remain ozeki. Harumafuji hurled Goeido with his left to win his 12th bout. Hakuho thrust against Kisenosato but the ozeki as he was near the verge of the ring shifted his position prompting the yokozuna to fall. Harumafuji leads, followed by Kisenosato and Takanoiwa.

13th day
Takanoiwa automatically won his 10th win as Chiyonokuni pulled out. Shodai prevented Terunofuji from having the freedom to take a good position. Shodai shoved out the ozeki fo his 9th win. Harumafuji drove Kisenosato out the ring to win his 11th bout. Hakuho immediately forced Goeido to fall. Harumafuji is the sole leader.

12th day
Takarafuji drove out Chiyo-otori to win his 9th bout. Takayasu and Yoshikaze slapped eachother. Takayasu lost balance first and was forced down. It's his 3rd loss. Goeido quickly drove out Ikioi. Kisenosato was shoved by Shodai but was able to withstand and come back with shoves to drive out Shodai for his 10th win. Harumafuji forced Kaisei to roll on the ring for his 10th win. Hakuho and Terunofuji had to redo the bout in which Hakuho was easily driven out. As a result, Kisenosato and Harumafuji tie.

11th day
Takayasu hurled Takarafuji with his left and won his 9th bout. Takarafuji succumbed to his 3rd loss. Shodai got a hold of Goeido's belt and drove out the ozeki. Goeido lost his 5th bout. Kisenosato shoved and shoved and drove out Ikioi. Terunofuji thrust down Yoshikaze for his 6th win. Hakuho drove out Kaisei. Harumafuji gave Ichinojo a powerful throw to win. The 2 yokozuna, Kisenosato and Takayasu tie for the lead.

10th day
Endo finally won by pushing out Tokushoryu. Shohozan shifted to the side, and Kisenosato fell. It's the ozeki's 2nd loss. Ikioi drove Terunofuji down the ring succumbing to his 5th loss. Goeido pulled away and forced down Tochiozan. Harumafuji charged into Takayasu and forced Takayasu to fall on his bottom. Hakuho struggled against Tochinoshin but in the end, drove out the Georgian. 5 are tied for the Emperor's Cup as Takayasu and Kisenosato lost.

9th day
Takayasu pulled Okinoumi towards him and drove him down. It's his 8th win. Tochiozan with his left forced Kaisei down to win his 6th bout. Goeido struggled against Tochinoshin and was driven out. Kisenosato and Terunofuji fought a long bout. In the end, Kisenosato drove out the Mongolian to secure a majority win. Hakuho's right knee could not sustain him, and he fell in the bout against Ikioi. It's the yokozuna's 2nd loss. Harumafuji gave thrusts, stopped, and repeated that. In the end he fell forward against Yoshikaze. Yoshikaze's red eye was again bloody. Takayasu and Kisenosato are the 2 leaders.

8th day
Takayasu drove down Tochiozan for his 7th win. Kisenosato pulled away then forced Kotoyuki out. Goeido had a good start against Terunofuji but in the end the Mongolian won. Harumafuji was in a dangerous position several times with his foot almost sticking out of the ring, but he managed to keep inside and force Shodai out. Hakuho watched his opponent Shohozan carefully, pulled away slightly then drove him out. Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kisenosato and Takayasu tie for the Emperor's Cup.

7th day
Kaisei automatically earned a win as Kotoshogiku pulled out of the tourney. Kisenosato quickly drove out Tochinoshin for his 6th win. Tochiozan kept on fighting and drove out Terunofuji. Goeido with his left forced Mitakeumi down. Hakuho pulled back and he looked defeatible but managed to force Myogiryu out. Harumafuji immediately drove Ikioi out. 6 rikishi lead with a loss each.

6th day
Ichinojo lost to Sadanoumi. There is no longer anyone in makuuchi with a clean record. As to the top rankers, Kisenosato almost lost to Myogiryu. The juries ruled Myogiryu fell first so Kisenosato was given the win. Mitakeumi shoved Terunofumi with all his might, forcing the ozeki to turn his back making it easy for Mitakeumi to drive him out the ring. Goeido forced Kaisei to fall on his hand. Kotoshogiku shoved and shoved, but he lost energy and was forced down by Okinoumi. Harumafuji forced Shohozan to fall. Hakuho droved Kotoyuki down.

5th day
Yoshikaze bled from his eyes after he receive a blow by Ichinojo. Ichinojo won his 5th bout. Shohozan forced out Terunofuji. The ozeki lost his first bout. Goeido pulled back the forced Okinoumi down. Kotoshogiku finally won his first bout by pusing out Mitakeumi. Tochiozan forced Kisenosato down at the verge of the ring. It's the ozeki's first loss. Takarafuji stepped back and drove Hakuho down on the ring. Hakuho's consecutive win was halted at 33. Harumafuji went into Myoriryu and drove him out. No top rankers have a perfect record anymore.

4th day
Goeido pushed out Shohozan for his 2nd win. Kotoshogiku easily went out of the ring in the bout against Takarafuji to succumb to his 4th loss. Kisenosato immediately drove out Okinoumi. Terunofuji took out Tochinoshin to keep his record clean. Kakuryu was out of the tourney and Takayasu automatically earned a win. Harumafuji got a grip of Mitakeumi's belt and forced him out. Hakuho punched Tochiozan's face with his elbow and forced him out.

3rd day
Kotoshogiku powerlessly lost again. This time to Myogiryu. Kisenosato drove out Takarafuji. Terunofuji forced out Kotoyuki. Goeido dropped on the ring forced by Takayasu. It's the ozeki's 2nd loss. Tochiozan got behind Kakuryu and forced the yokozuna out. Hakuho with his right drove out Mitakeumi. Harumafuji was pushed out by Okinoumi. It was a day filled with upsets.

2nd day
Kisenosato got a hold of Kaisei's belt and shoved the big Brazilian out. Terunofuji drove out Myogiryu. Goeido had a strong start and drove out Kotoyuki. Kotoshogiku fell in the bout against Takayasu. Hakuho pushed out Okinoumi. Harumafuji forced down Tochiozan. Kakuryu was at first pushed by Mitakeumi, but shoved back and won.

1st day
Endo shoved Ichinojo but Ichinojo pushed back and won. Terunofuji forced Oginoumi out. Goeido fell out the ring in the bout against Takarafuji. Tochiozan drove out Kotoshogiku. Kisenosato with a grip of Mitakeumi's belt shoved and won. Harumafuji forced Tochinoshin to go round and round, finally threw the Georgian. Kakuryu immediately pushed out Kotoyuki Hakuho forced Takayasu down. Already 2 ozekis lost.

Pre Tourney highlight
Aminishiki and Toyoshima pull out
37 year old Aminishiki and 33 year old Toyonoshima, both who often defeat top rankers are out for injuring their Achilles. Both are likely to fall to juryo division.
