Japan in 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing

122 athletes (48 men, 74 women) and 138 officials are taking part. Japan's flagbearer is Akito Watabe in nordic ski combined. Captain is speed skater Miho Takagi.

Closing Ceremony
Japan's curling medalists, figure skaters were visible, with the pair skaters showing their lifting skill. They former a circle around the French athletes, celebrating the festivity. The next day Team Japan flew back home.

Feb 20
The women's curling team made it to the final after defeating Switzerland. It's faced UK, which it defeated in the previous Winter Games for the bronze medal. This time, UK kept its lead, exceeding to 10-3. Japan conceded. Japan won the silver. The match received strong TV rating of 29.2 percent in Japan according to NHK .

Feb 17
Miho Takagi won her first gold ever. It's in the women's speed skating 1000 meters. She clocked an Olympic record of 1 minute 13.19 seconds. This is her final competition wrapping up with 1 gold and 3 silver. In women's figure skating, controvery over Russia's Camila Valieva given the greenlight to participate despite allegation she took a banned drug. She tumbled in her jump. Kaori Sakamoto did not perform any quads nor triple axles. But with perfect performances throughout in Beijing, she won the bronze. In nordic combines men's event, Japan won the bronze. They are Akito Watabe,his brother Yoshito, Hideaki Nagai and finishing the race Ryota Yamamoto.

Feb 14
In snowboard big air, 17-year old Kokomo Murase won the bronze. She became the youngest Japanese women ever to win a medal at the Winter Games. The youngest before her as figure skater Mao Asada. 4th was Reira Iwabuchi who attemped the triple corke, three off axis flips, but fell as she slid the slope. In women's pursuit final, the Pyeongchang gold medal winning team appeared to gain pace until the final curve. Nana Takagi fell.The team consisting of her sister Miho and Ayano Sato finished 2nd. For Miho it's her 3rd medal in Beijing. In Nordic ski, Akito Watabe won the bronze medal. It's his 3rd consecutive Olympic medal after winning silver. He was 5th in the large hill, showed speed in the 10 kilometer race.

Feb 13
In women's speed skating 500 meter, Miho Takagi won her 2nd medal in Beijing. It's a silver by clocking 37.12 seconds. Last Olympic champion Nao Kodaira finished 17th.

Feb 12
Ryoyu Kobayashi in the men's large hill ski jump won the silver medal this time, following the gold in the normal hill. In the first attempt, he was on top. But was unable to beat Norwegian Marius Lindvikin the 2nd jump. In men's speed skating 500 meter race, Wataru Morishige earned the bronze clocking 34.49 seconds.

Feb 11
Ayumu Hirano clinched a gold medal in men's snowboard half pipe. But there was question about judges under scoring his 2nd attempt with a 91.75 which gave him 2nd place. In the 3rd run, he proved to show an even superb performance with the judges giving him a 96. Ayumu's younger brother was also in the final, finishing 9th place. By the way a big applause to Shaun White who is retiring from the Olympics.

Feb 10
In men's figure skating, 2 time gold medalist Yuzuru Hanyu appeared in the 2nd to the last group in the free program. He missed a jump in the short program 2 days before after his blade got stuck in a hole. He was 8th at that point. In the free program. he attemped a quad axel and fell. He finished 4th. Fellow Japanese Shoma Uno won the bronze medal. It's his 2nd consecutive Olympic medal. 18 year old Yuma Kageyama won the silver. In women's snowboard halfpipe, 22 year old Sena Tomita won the bronze. It's the first medal in the event at any Olympics.

Feb 8
In sky jump mix team event, Sara Takanashi gave a big jump. But after her jump she was disqualified. It's due to her uniform. She wore the same uniform 2 days before for her individual jump. She changed her outfit for her 2nd jumb. Her teammates jumped well, improving Japan's standing in the end to 4th place.

Feb 7
Miho Takagi wins the silver in women's 1500 meter speedskating. But as she used to be the world record holder, she expressed her disappointment not able to win the gold.

Japan's figure skating team wins its first medal. It's a bronze. The winners are Shoma Uno, Yuma Kageyama, Wakaba Higuchi, Kaori Sakamoto, pair skaters Ryuichi Kihara, Ruri Miura and dance couple Misato and Takeru (Tim) Komatsubara.

Feb 6
25 year old Ryoyu Kobayashi wins ski jump gold in the normal hill event. His older brother finished 27th. It's the first gold in ski jump in Japan since the Nagano Winter Games.

Feb 5
Japan's first medal winner is Ikuma Horishima in men's freestyle moguls. He won the bronze. In the previous Pyeongchang, he fell during his skii and finished 11th.

Opening Ceremony Feb 4
Japan did not send its political leader to the ceremony. It has not openly pronounced a political boycott. The most high ranking is Seiko Hashimoto, President of Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, who is also an upper house member. 13 took part on the ground in the ceremony.
