Japan in 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeonchang

JAPAN'S MEDAL COUNT
GOLD:4 SILVER: 5 BRONZE: 4

124 athletes and 145 officials are taking part. Japan's flagbearer 45 year old Noriaki Kasai of ski jump, known as the legend. It's his 8th Winter Games. Captain is 31 year old speed skater Nao Kodaira who holds the world record in the 500 meters.

Closing Ceremony
Captain Nao Kodaira waved the Japanese flag while a number of athletes participated in the ceremony dancing along to the DJs. They celebrated the best Winter Olympic Games for Japan winning a total 13 metals.

Feb 24
In a new Olympic sport of women's mass start, Nana Takagi glides past others near the end of the race to win the gold. In women's curling, the first medal was won. It's a bronze.

Feb 21
Women's speed skaters broke the Olympic record in team pursuit to win the gold clocking 2:53'89. They're Miho Takagi, Nana Takagi and Ayano Sato . Miho won 2 medals before this in Pyeonchang. Miho and Nana are sisters. This is Japan's total 11th medal, or the most ever the country has won in a Winter Olympic Games.

Feb 18
In women's 500 meter speed skating race, Nao Kodaira clocked 36.94 seconds, an Olympic record to win. After the race she hugged South Korea's Lee Sang-wha a 2 time 500 meter Olympic gold medalist, who finished silver. It was a warm moment.

Feb 17
In men's figure skating, Yuzuru Hanyu who took the lead in the short program landing all his jumps clean, tackled the free program well. He lost balance when he tried to land his quad in the later part, but managed some clean ones too. In free skating he was 2nd after Nathan Chen. But overall, he topped everyone else to win the gold. It's the first time in 66 years that a figure skater won a gold in 2 consecutive Winter Games. Just behind Hanyu was Shoma Uno. In his very first Olympic Games the 20 year old won the silver.

Feb 14
It's a medal rush day. In the men's snowboard halfpipe Ayumu Hirano won the silver, after being beaten by Shaun White. It's Hirano's 2nd medal following Sochi Olympics. Atsuto Watabe too won his 2nd Olympic medal by coming in 2nd in men's nordic normal hills. Then in the evening, in speedskating women's 100 meters, Nao Kodaira won the silver. Just behind her, Miho Takagi won her 2nd medal in Pyeongchang.

Feb 12
Japan's first medal winner is Daichi Hara in men's freestyle mogul. He won the bronze. Miho Takagi won the silver in speedskating women's 1500 meters. She clocked her best record at 1:54'55". Ski jump icon Sara Takanashi won the bronze.

Opening Ceremony Feb 9
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the ceremony in the Games highlighted by North Korea's attendance. He said he was there to cheer on the Japanese athletes and personally went to see the ski jumpers. Other notable guests were US Vice Presidnent Mike Pence, North Korea's top leaderships. Before the ceremony figure skating team event kicked off. Japan's Shoma Uno took first place with the highest point in the men's short program. But to be noted, as Yuzuri Hanyu decided to pull out of the men's event, it may be difficult for Japan to win a medal, as other competitors are not good enough.

Feb 8

Japan's ski jumpers already went into competition for the normal hills.One of them Noriaki Kasai. All 4 Japanese advanced to the final round.
